So I started the game after hearing so much about it.. and it's just not clicking with me. Combat and movement feels extremely clunky and slow. The interface is also a little weird. The world map is disappointing for an open-ended game (first time I used it I accidently teleported to the top floor of the vault for no reason).

Anyways, playing it just makes me feel like I should play FO3 or FONV again.. I also started Baldur's Gate yesterday, and I liked it, so its not the genre/viewing angle or anything. I'm not sure FO2 is worth the hassle if I don't like this.

You can change combat speed in preferences (press Esc, while you're in the game. after changing the speed, save).
Another thing you can do, is to use Sfall. The combat will be even faster than FO3/NV, at the click of a button! :)
If you wish to install Sfall for Fallout 1, look for v1.18e, timeslip (the creator) stopped making mods for FO1, so the latest version is not compatible.
Frankly, if you don't like the first, second won't change your mind. Fallout 2 is improved over the original game. Bigger locations, bigger game, different tone, improved writing and better story (to me at least, but tastes and all that) more humor, more perks, traits etc. But the basic mechanics are very much similar as is the game aesthetic. Only improved.

Still, if you have it already, give it a try. First two locations are a chore, especially starting location, but once you hit The Den, game starts to really shine.
Thanks for the advice! I did not know you can increase battle speed. I will test it, but this time I will play FO2 instead :) It seems a safer bet.
OK I started FO2, I think this is MUCH better and has a better atmosphere/story.

However, I'm finding it very frustrating.. I started with small guns, gifted and I think good natured (Science-guy). I can't hit anything, it takes me about 15 mins to kill a Geck after running back to healer etc. I can't seem to find guns anywhere except for on sale for 800 bottle caps which I don't have. Someone said I can get a gun in Vic's place but the door is locked and my lockpicking is 15 so I can't seem to open it (using latest restoration patch). Anyone know how I can get a gun or what I can do? Note: I literally cannot stand to fight another battle, so anything that doesn't have a battle would awesome.

The first thing you should do, after leaving Arroyo, is getting some protection (leather jacket) and a melee weapon (because guns are expensive). In Buckner House, Klamath, you'll find a tribal, Sulik. Steal the jacket and sledgehammer from him.
There are some abandoned houses in this city, full of rats, kill all of them, to earn XP easily. In one of these houses you'll find a manhole. Explore the cavern, search for a corpse, you'll find a pistol (it's one of the weakest, but it's a ranged weapon).
After doing quests in Klamath, go to The Den. You can get very powerful guns there, search for a guy called Tubby. Buy the guns, or kill him (it's worth, he has Desert Eagle and 10mm SMG. Don't worry you won't be attacked by everyone). Be careful with the kid at the entrance, he/she will try to steal your items!

There's rat trouble in one part of town, I think you can get a gun from around there. Also, if you have the cash, pay to get Sulik freed, everything's easier when he's around.

Oh, yea, already mentioned.
Thanks for both your replies! I can now enjoy this game. I'm in the rat cave with Sulik finally. He is killing everything after I miss the enemy twice. My small guns is almost 100 and I don't have a gun yet, pretty insane. How did he learn about guns if the tribe didn't have any? Makes no sense.

Anyways, I'll try to overlook these things and enjoy the rest of the game..

Best not even think about computer and other science skills. :)
Anyway, you still have gecko caves to clear out and they can be a real pain.

Endure, the game only really takes off in the next town.

Actually, when you start the game, you can see a pistol in the table. See again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9oVZvVNVZ0
But if she has a firearm, why can't you steal it? I don't know, maybe the developers didn't want the player to have acess to guns so early.
I think it's because some critters don't have all animations, so they can't use some weapons (this is why Sulik can't use pistols*. Because he doesn't have the animation frames required). This is what happens when you hurry to finish a game. :/
There's a option in Restoration Project to change the appearance of NPCs when they equip different armor, it's very useful to fix this problem. :)

* = Except pistols that have the appearance of a SMG, like 14mm.

Yeah, I noticed in restoration patch its even more difficult to get a gun. There was no gun in the rat cave lol. However, there was dynamite, which allowed me to blow up Vic's door and get the pipe gun. I then managed to buy a 10mm pistol in The Den for 800 caps. Finally! I suggest newcomers if they are reading this and playing restoration patch to put some skills in melee or unarmed when they start or they will find it frustrating like I did. It also makes more sense from RP/character perspective.

Purchasing the gun wasn't necessary (see the video above). You gonna need money to purchase the car, be more careful next time.
Good luck with your character, Nirude. Feel free to ask anything, and I'll do my best to help. I love talking about this game. :)

As others have said, the first few levels are a bit of a chore - especially if you decide to use them to level up (which I would definitely recommend for new players).

After that, getting guns is easy because you either happen to be able to loot them all the time, or you can sell the guns you loot all the time to buy better guns. Plus not to mention quest rewards (in terms of cash and/or items/guns/etc.).

There will be a point in the game where you might very well ask what to do with all your cash... ;)
