Hard to say. Depends on you (your preferences, personality) I think. One problem with the patches is that they dont just fix and improve things. They also break things. Like the AI supposedly was better at some point and got screwed with some patch. Or (not supposedly this time - I have witnessed it myself, see my posts in this forum) the latest patch which broke AI tactical summons. I think Stardock needs to be more thrilled about fixing this.
I see. That's a real shame. I understand that things can break in patches. Would you say that there are major features which have been broken? Or would they not be so noticeable? If it helps, I tend to play games on the hardest difficulty unless it becomes an absolute chore to overcome a cheating AI, for example.

The mentioned AI thing I dont know enough about because I only ever played the newer versions - I think 2.4 forward or sth.
The mentioned AI tactical summoning bug is for me serious enough to postpone playing the game until its fixed. Or going back to a version when it still worked. But I dont think I would call this a "major feature".
(And I think there were other things which supposedly broke in some older patches. I have read a lot of posts about FELH but this is from before I started playing.)

The tactical AI summoning bug is noticeable. It will print text like "X summons Y" but in ~90% of cases Y wont appear.

Based on my own experiences playing the game (I am a very strong player, have certain preferences for maps and settings, my game is modded) the AI is very bad and the only way to make it challenging is to crank up the difficulty to the highest level. At which it will have extreme boni ("cheating") and I think also cheat in a qualitative manner like being able to see through the FoW.
But note that its possible to set up the game so that the AI opponents arent the interesting challenge. You can crank up the world difficulty so that monsters are the main challenge.

The currently biggest problems I have with FELH 2.5.1 in this order:
1) End turn hangs. (This can happen a lot if the combination of map size and AI power is high.)
2) AI is incompetent.
3) AI controlled tactical summons dont work.
Thank you for your insight. It sounds to me that it would be best to hold off on this for the time being. Seeing as how patches still come every once in a while, I will wait and see how things improve. End turn hangs are especially concerning.
