It asks me what's the word after this or that word and I type anything and hit return and then it crashes. What I do is, after the first 5 of 6 chars get full of stuff, I save the game then exit to dos, then start the game back up and remove the sixth char from the party then add a mule (non-played char that just holds stuff, easy way to dupe stuff too) and trade all the stuff on the first five chars to mules. Then remove the mule/s and readd the sixth char to the party and continue the game. It works perfectly with all the AD&D games I've played so far, Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, and Pools of Darkness. But not Champions of Krynn. I readd the 6th char after transferring accumulated stuff to mules and it asks me for an answer I cannot provide. :( I bought the 20-pack of AD&D games in early November and have been playing just those games ever since.
Try typing something in. It shouldn't matter what you type, as long as you type *something*.

(This assumes you have the GOG version, of course.)

Yes I typed GOG the first time and nothing happened, typed GOG the second time and nothing happened, typed something the third time and the gog window disappeared. That was just now, should've made a vid of it. In early November I bought one of the GOG specials, Forgotten Realms archive I, II, and III which gave me 20 AD&D games, all of which are in my library. I have 49 titles in my library.

Here's an extended version. From startup to crash. Pardon the shakiness, I'[m holding my digital camera with my right hand and typing with my left hand.

There is a file called codes.pdf in the game folder. Get the right one from there :)

You need to get the manual out and put in the word it asks
It's patched out of the forgotten realms games but not the dragonlance ones
There's a patch that can bypass the copy protection:

http://www.patchery.net/patchery/patch.html?id=1000019

1. Open Explorer to C:\Gog Games\Champions of Krynn
2. Make a backup of the GAME.OVR file
3. Drag the file GAME.OVR onto the drop box on the website above
4. Click the "Download patched file" button that appears
5. After the file is downloaded, copy it over the top of the existing GAME.OVR file

You can then play the game and answer anything to the copy protection prompt.
I've added Death Knights of Krynn as well:

http://www.patchery.net/patchery/patch.html?id=1000042

Same process as for Champions of Krynn above.

Thank you very much for these two patches, this is very convenient. :)
I forgot to mention that the Dark Queen of Krynn is up there as well:

http://www.patchery.net/patchery/patch.html?id=1000040

I've played through Champions of Krynn and Death Knights of Krynn all the way through now and can confirm I had no issues when using these patches. Working my way through Dark Queen of Krynn now and so far no issues.

I guess it would be handy if Gog could apply these to the base install?
Ok it's noticed, again thank you very much for these patches. :)

Looks like the website is down. It was working just a few weeks ago! Anyone have copies?
The domain expired and I didn't renew it this year. Here are the three that you are looking for though:

Champions of Krynn
Description: There are two areas where copy protection appears: when loading a game and when saving the game. This bypasses both. The load game copy protection screen will still appear, but will accept any response. Verified to work on the gog.com release.

Death Knights of Krynn
Description: There are two areas where copy protection appears: when loading a game and when saving the game. This completely bypasses both. Verified to work on the gog.com release - the START.EXE file comes already patched, but the GAME.OVR file still needs patching (as of 02/02/2017) to prevent the copy protection appearing while saving the game.

Probably a dumb question on my part, but when you say to change the values to, for example, EB -- -- --, what do the -- entries mean? I'm keeping a backup so I won't accidentally destroy my game - although I suppose I can always redownload it - but I'd rather do it right. The only values I can enter are hex numbers from 00 to FF. Do I leave those values unchanged, change them to 00, or delete the entries entirely, shrinking the file?

I know that hex editing is kind of (or entirely) off topic for discussion of AD&D Gold Box Krynn games, but the constant code checks are cramping my style.

Thanks for the help, never manually patched a binary file before.
