Hey,
I've just finished DKK. Got my characters to 3m exp (shared for multi-class).

I'm using a mac and boxer.

I've been stunned how much I've enjoyed this retro nostalgia but now I can't get my characters to transf :(

I've located my DKK files in:
C:\Users/<username>/DOS Games/Death Knights Of Krynn.boxer/C death-knights-of-krynn.harddisk/deathkrynn/SAVE

I can't configure the DQK install to point to this file. I've put the files both in the krynn_save folder and the actual save game folder for DQK but they still can't be located.

Any suggestions?

Sorry I can't help with an exact answer because I don't have these games myself, but I would try moving your DKK save folder into the DQK .boxer folder. Something like:

~/DOS Games/Dark Queen of Krynn.boxer/C dark-queen-of-krynn.harddisk/deathkrynn/SAVE

(the filenames are not exact, but hopefully you get what I mean)

Hi there, really appreciate the reply. I've tried moving my save folder into the DQK folder, but it still doesn't work.
You have to think in terms of which paths DODBox uses, not the file paths in your Mac system.
Also, DOSBox can only use 8 letters in a filename, which means C:\Users/<username>/DOS Games/Death Knights Of Krynn.boxer/C death-knights-of-krynn.harddisk/deathkrynn/SAVE will be trunctuated (sp?).

I'd recommend installing the Gold Box to somehing like C:/Games instead, with Death Knight installed in C:/Games/DKK/ and Dark Queen in C:/Games/DQK/

It makes it much easier to handle with DOSBox.

Unfortunately it's been so long since I played the GB that I've forgotten the details.

But I made a post many years ago which may be helpful:
"The tricky part when using DosBox is editing the CFG files correctly, taking into account that DosBox (depending on version) may trunctuate file names and use different paths, so that game 2 knows where to look for the characters from game 1.
When using the D-Fend Reloaded version of DosBox, I just start DosBox instead of the game. Then I do a DIR command to see what the actual path to the games and their folder names are.

For Treasures (cracked version to avoid the the copy protection questions) the original CFG files had these lines:
C:\TEST\TREASA~1\TREA\SAVE\
C:\GATEWAY\SAVE\

To be able to import characters using D-Fend Reloaded I had to change to the following:
C:\TREASURE\SAVE\
C:\GATEWA~1\SAVE\ "

That person says you need to rename the Death Knights of Krynn save folder to SAVE_KN and place it in the Dark Queen of Krynn boxer state folder.

I'm really hoping for your sake that you don't end up having to try changing/creating new folders which are DOS compatible and editing the .cfg file as mentioned in the post above by Petrus, but you might have to...

I'll give you a couple other locations you could try copying the save folder to first:
(Again, apologies that the exact names won't be correct)

1) Into the actual game app itself. GOG's Boxer apps usually look something like this:

~<wherever your game app is located>/Dark Queen of Krynn/Contents/Resources/game/Dark Queen of Krynn/Contents/Resources/Dark Queen of Krynn.boxer/C.harddisk

(This is also likely where you'll find the .cfg file mentioned in the post above.)

2) GOG's Boxer games usually put my save files here:

~/Library/Application Support/Boxer/Gamebox States/com.game.<gamename>/Current.boxerstate/ C <gamename>.harddisk

It looks like you are using the full version of Boxer though, not GOG's standalone version, so you probably won't have this path (you have the path you put in your original post instead).

Thanks. I've done that - and it still doesn't seem to work. All my Krynn files are in there.

Just to confirm, are you using the full version of Boxer to run the DOS files instead of using GOG's standalone apps? (I'm asking because your file directory is not traditional from my experience with GOG's Boxer games).

I'm not familiar with all the little technicalities of running DOS games in Boxer, but if you are not using GOG's standalone apps then that could be part of the problem. Perhaps the original DOS files are looking for a directory which doesn't exist (as Petrus posted), but GOG has fixed that in their version so that it can locate the files.

So if you are using full Boxer, another thing you could try (although it's extremely roundabout) is:

1) Download the DQK standalone mac app from your GOG account.
2) Run the GOG standalone DQK app and create a simple fake party in just so the game will create a current.boxerstate SAVE and you can see where it's located (see my location#2 in my post above)
3) Move your SAVE_KN to that location (something like /current.boxerstate/C gamename.harddisk)
4) Run the GOG standalone DQK app again and import your party to DQK and then save the game (you may have to start the game first). *fingers crossed*
5) Now hopefully the DQK "SAVE" has your DKK characters, and you can move the DQK "SAVE" to your preferred location.

Hi there matey. I'm using standalone boxer with DKK and DQK I found on an abandonware site. Boxer doesn't seem to have a boxerstate folder on my mac. The files are all saved in this folder C:\Users/<username>/DOS Games/Death Knights Of Krynn.boxer/C death-knights-of-krynn.harddisk/deathkrynn/SAVE

With DQk being saved in it's on folder with c harddisk

And therein your problem lies. In that case I'd recommend purchasing the legal versions from GOG.

I'll do that then. I didn't realise abandonware was illegal?

Yeah, "abandonware" is not a legal term, it's definitely illegal. Especially when there is a publisher who owns the legal rights and currently sells the game.

If you do purchase the games and still cannot get the characters to transfer with our help (although it looks to me like it should work), you can contact GOG support for help too.
Hi there
I've bought the gog version. I've located the boxerstate folder. Where do I put my krynn files?
Attachments:
Open the current.boxerstate and in there should be "C gamename.harddisk" open that file and put the SAVE_KN inside.
EDIT: replace gamename with whatever name GOG gave it.
EDIT2: I'm going out now, should be back in a few hours to check back in again and see how you're doing.

Hey, really appreciate all your help.

I can't open the current boxer state. I'm on a mac, and it just loads up text wrangler. There doesn't seem to be anyway of opening it and seeing the files / folders.
Re-read your advice on a different post. I've done it!

Woohoo!!!
