hello!

I have been playing the game for 2-3 days and I can't seem to understand how to attract more monsters than the enemy.

So the question is, is the number of attracted mosnters predetermined?

I always build libraries first so I have more warlocks because after a certain number of monsters, they just stop coming.

Hello, gold is not an important factor in attracting units. You need to have enough gold for 1 payday and at least some empty lair space for them to keep coming, but that's usually a given.

Key is that you have the rooms a unit type requires to come through, 9 tiles of library for warlocks, 1 tile of barracks for Orcs, and so on. Larger rooms do help (so if you have a massive library you are likely to get a larger percentage of warlocks).

Also, every map comes with a 'level script', which defines which units you can attract, how many of each unit are available (combined for all players) and how many units you can get in total(portal limit). If you reach the portal limit no more units will come until you lose some, you can tell when this is the case by the blinking creature icon on the first tab.
There's no way to tell (apart from looking at the script) how many of each type you can get.

oh.. there is a population cap. That means that its hard to have orcs and trolls because it takes a long time to research the rooms and make them. When at last you create the rooms you already have 20+ monsters in your dungeon
That's usually not the case. There's also a portal-speed that's different on each map, but creatures generally come slow enough that most rooms are researched by the time you reach your portal limit. Especially since Dragons and Warlocks (your best researchers) come straight away.

Build your library, train your researchers to lvl 2-4 (they have double the research rate at lvl 4 compared to lvl 1 and by that time they have their best spells) while you reinforce the walls of your library (an efficient room works faster) and start researching. Continue their training only after all rooms are researched.

Trolls have little value, Orcs are all right, but Mistresses are very good and they will be attracted to the torture room which takes a while to research. Together with Dragons and Bile Demons (which are attracted by the starting rooms) they are the creature to get. There are some powerful heroes, and Vampires are also very good, but they don't come from the portal. Hell Hounds are usually the only creature you won't get normally because it is attracted by a room that is researched at the very end.

And remember, you can always throw creatures you don't want back into the portal to make space for new creatures. For example have the worthless creatures build doors (for increased room efficiency) or research new rooms (if you don't have warlocks shooting at them) until you reach the limit, and throw them into the temple or portal when you do so you get creatures you do want. This way you have an army if you are attacked in the mean time, but don't waste gold on training the weaklings.
