I've read this long ago: http://www.gog.com/forum/dungeon_keeper_series/dungeon_keeper_ii_version_deiscussion/post1

But then I see this more recent post: http://www.gog.com/forum/dungeon_keeper_series/dungeon_keeper_ii_version_deiscussion/post17

Now i'm confused, is the single player campaign opponent AI bad in this version or is it working fine? That was really the only thing holding me back from playing it, but if the single player campaign AI works, then i'll play it.

People keep reporting that the AI since 1.6 is easier to beat, also within the single player campaign.
There's a community mod, that uses the old AI from 1.5x with the new 1.73 executable from GOG.

Saw that mod some time ago, but it seems to still have some issues from what i'm reading. Thanks anyways though.
