I'm a gamer to the heart like a lot of people scuttling through servers of this fine website.
and I must say Duke Nukem was a fine game when it came out, and it still is, not only in historical point of view, this is a game that downright shocked parents and was cheered by gamers, but why you ask?
I'll tell you.
Level design first of all is always intresting and well made, with full blown action, explosions, hot babes, lots of secrets (sometimes with more babes) and witty humour, one can't deny that this game didn't stand out when it first came out. And to be honest with you, it still does.
The second thing I'd like to address is the weapon and enemy design, honestly, even to this day, you can count the games with your one hand fingers where you can shrink your enemy, boot it to a cute splat and hero of game throws 'governator' like one liner. AWESOME, and talking about this, how many other games you can riddle your enemy with machinegun, watch him grab his throat in pain and then boot him in the face. This game is just digitalized AWESOME (sorry chuck norris, you can never be this cool)
Also the game engine went to new heights, you can actually interract with environment, but note, when I say it was interractive, you must remember that this game came out when shooting a toilet to break it down and water pouring out of it was "FUCKING AWESOME". Other than taking a leak in a toilet and then booting it broken, you could shoot almost every screendisplay there was, give chicks money to show their boobs and also play pool with your pistol (I prefer shotgun, though you don't have many balls left after that... but the game does have balls, and that's the point)
All in all, this was just awesome game with attitude when it came out... and it still is....
This is definetly something that every gamer should own, it's important part of our gaming culture and history, and I must say I feel ashamed that I didn't own this game before buying it from here recently.
But there it stand on my digital shelf, thank you 3D Realms for a great game, thank you GoG for... err... Good old Games.
and looking foward to Duke Nukem Forever... if it ever gets done.
