What's the best control setup for a laptop to play Duke Nukem 3D on?
I find that it's quite hard to play it on the laptop compared to PC or Xbox 360.

If you plug in an external mouse, it should be fairly easy. Otherwise your left looking around with the keyboard.

Personally, for all FPS games I use

E = Forward
D = Back
S = Strafe Left
F = Strafe Right

Right Mouse Button = Jump
Left Mouse Button = Shoot
Middle Mouse Button = Alt Fire or Melee
Space Bar = Duck
A = Run

Then I fill in any extra functions with surrounding keys (like using C to turn on the flashlight if that option is in a game).

If you don't have an extra mouse, you could probably look around with the keyboard like this:

J = Look Left
L = Look Right
I = Look Up
K = Look Down (or switch I and K if you like the look up/down inverted)

Then use the space bar as fire and assign something else to duck.
I should clarify, I play Duke 3d with the Eduke32 Source Port. It makes it look and control so much better.

Since I don't really have a good surface to use a mouse on I'm trying to play with just the keyboard.

I use the Eduke32 port too, will try the J, L, I, K setup you mentioned sometime. Thanks.
I don't actually use a mouse. I use a thumb controlled trackball (Logitech Trackman). It works well for tight areas where you can't move a mouse around. You can even put it in front of the keyboard / notebook if you want to.
This is my keyboard only setup:
W: Forward
A: Strafe Left
S: backward
D: Strafe Right

O: Fire
K: Turn Left
L: Strafe On (your probably won't use this)
; (semi-colen): Turn Right.

I: Kick
P: Turn 180
Numpad1: Look Up
Numpad0: Look Down (Don't use these much, as in Vanilla Duke3d, aiming is just like Doom for the most part)

Q: Inventory left
E: Inventory Right
R: Use Inventory
F: Use/open
SPACE-BAR: Jump
C: Crouch
Z: Talk
Y: Center Aim

1-7: Weapons 1-7
X: Weapon 8
V: Weapon 9
G: Weapon 10

AUTO-RUN always on.

I recommend you use the above but change
L: Strafe On
P: Turn 180
Numpad1: Look Up
Numpad0: Look Down

to
L: Turn 180
P: Look Up
' (quote): Look Down
My config:
Move forward: W
Strafe left: A
Strafe right: D
Move backward: S

Open: E
Run: LShift
Jump: Space
Crouch: LCtrl
Jetpack: J and LAlt (jump & crouch for altitude)

Inventory: Enter
Inventory left: Z
Inventory right: C

Kick: Q (must be ready to kick the crap out of everyone always!)
