Hurlocks? Genlocks? Shrieks?

I mean come on they call the Ogres "Ogres" why not call Hurlocks Orcs:

http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Hurlock

Genlocks are Goblins:

http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Genlock

And the Shrieks I would call them Trolls:

http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Shriek
No clue, that's pretty much what I call them. I mean, we already know they are obvious allusions to orcs and goblins and whatnot anyway. Maybe they thought it was edgier to not remind us of Lord of the Rings?
prolly a desire to stand out from every other rpg in existance that uses those common monster names/achetypes

not to mention that at least with genlocks they dont analog well with goblins since goblins are generally weak cowardly unless as a group against a smaller or weaker group

also the origins differ in that in AD&D at least each is a distinct race having their own god or pantheon of gods

in dragon age they are products of taint inflicted on a female of a given race to produce a specific form of darkspawn
elves = shrieks, humans = hurlocks, dwarves = genlocks and qunari = ogres

note the tolkien works have orc and goblin used to describe the same creatures (ie in hobbt they were called goblins but in most other works they are referred to as orcs)

anyway thats my 2 cents take it as you will

IMO, Dragon Age enemies are boring compared to D&D/Tolkien.

In DA, it is just a horde of mindless monsters, no personalities, no individuality. You may as well be fighting zombies, robots, or rocks.

In D&D you parley with giants. Tolkien's trolls have conversations about how to cook you.

Even just the undead have more personality in D&D/Tolkien than the Darkspawn. Liches/Vampires talk, reveal their crazy plans, etc...

Darkspawn are just cannon fodder. Endless cannon fodder is just tedious and boring.
I dont see any real connection with those names. They dont look the same, they dont act the same. They are darkspawn so its logical they have a separate names.

That's exactly what they are: mindless puppets of the Archdemon. Their will is completely dominated. It's not until you play the expansion that you start to understand this, when you meet "awakened" Darkspawn who realize how pointless and empty their lives are, and try to give themselves names and purposes.
Dragon Age isn't d&d.

Genlock = a dwarf who has been tainted by the darkspawn.
Gurlock = a human who has been tainted.

It is part of the lore, man. Every rpg out there doesn't have the same lore as d&d.

Darkspawn have nothing to do with orcs at all.

There are zombies in d&d too, and mindless skeletons and whatnot.

There are also enemies in DA that you can parley with, have conversations with, and all that. The Werewolves, the various demons, the talking trees, + + +

The Darkspawn are basically just the "zombies" of Thedas.

Yet they refer to the Qunari tainted by the Darkspawn as an Ogre :P

Yes. That is what an ogre is in that world. Shrek is an ogre too. That doesn't mean there has to be Orcs in the Shrek movies.

In Dragon Age 2 and 3 they made the genlocks and emissaries a little bit more unique, but in Origins they basically are just orcs and goblins, you're absolutely right. Anybody who says otherwise is in denial.

No offense but I kinda wish there was a way to replace thier names in game so that it says "Orc" or "Goblin" or "Troll" on top of thier heads.

Just for traditions sake.
If you call them Troll, it would be dumb as hell. Since Trolls already exist in the DA universe. They are a different species. They show up plenty in DA:I.

Are you referring to Giants?
From the official wiki.

"Giants are gargantuan creatures which tower over most living creatures in Thedas at tall heights, and are described as being very much like a "Troll". "

Hurlock = human turned into darkspawn

Genlock = dwarf turned into darkspawn

Ogre = Qunari turned into darkspawn

The darkspawn taint is a disease. It isn't a race or several races. Calling them goblins or orcs or whatever makes as much sense as calling a human zombie an orc.

Yeah, that's so different from orcs....

First off, Troll like does not mean troll, it means it's similar to a troll. Maybe english isn't your first language, so I can forgive you for that.

Second, Inquisition came out half a decade after Origins. The darkspawn were ripoffs of LOTR orcs years before Bioware introduced giants to Dragon Age. Stop making excuses. This is a company that calls bison druffalos and acts like it's a different thing.
