Sorry If this is a really nooby question, but I have been playing this game for a while now and I still don't know how to place one of a stack of items in the inventory or in a chest etc. Like for example, to make Chester into Shadow Chester, you need to place one nightmare fuel in every one of his inventory slots.

How do I split a stack of items?
