I'm asking this on behalf of a friend of mine, who's using Vista. He owns a boxed original copy of the game, not DBTS. He installs it fine, and has the menu stuttering problem, but we managed to solve it too. Now he tries to go in-game to Quest, and the game just crashes with an error "WINDIE.EXE has encountered a problem bla bla bla"
Then, he tries Arena, and before he can even reach the Arena's main menu (where you get to choose characters, choose multiplay settings, choose arena etc), the game crashes with the same problem
Funnily, he can access the tutorial
He's tried allowing administrator rights, but still no success. Anyone here with advice?

Sorry I forgot to post this as a Question thread. Re-posting so that anyone who solves this can get reps

I'm also using a boxed copy of DBTS and having the exact same problem.
I just bought this game today because of the promo here on GoG but like this post, I can play the tutorial fine, but I cannot play the game at all. It crashes to desktop for me.
I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and had to run it in a minimum of Windows 98 or lower compatibility mode or it would not pop-up the dialog box asking me which renderer to use. If I let it run in XP mode or Higher (ie Vista) the pop-up dialog would NOT come up and it would render everything wrong (all colors are messed up). Similarly I had to use the software renderer or it would mess up even in Win98 or lower mode.
The kick in the pants really is when running in XP compatibility mode or higher (even no compatibility mode either) I can get into the Quest/Arena mode without it crashing but it would be impossible to play because the rendering is messed up.
The DBTS Xtended patch here seems to have solved my issue as the new DX9 mode it offers works fine in Win7 x64. But for some reason it or DBTS itself seems to crash Windows Explorer when I exit the game.

Don't worry it happens to me too.
