Soon as I step off the stairs I am mobbed by blue demons and a lieutenant. There is nowhere to run or hide. I retreated up teh stairs and now when I come down they are so thick the way is blocked and they kill me in about 3 seconds. I can phase past them with a scroll but it doesnt matter, they take me down pretty quick, theres lava everywhere and its a big cavern. Its wierd because I haven't had much problems up till now, and now its impossible. Did I miss something? I just got a quest for the Bone Altar up top...

Im on the PS version btw.
git gud
start a new game and get more xp/items, play smart, clogging your entrance with monsters just means you are bad :P you could've lured them away from the stairs and escaped with town portal then take them one by one or something

Funny, but not helpful.
Still same question, was the Leautinent and horde of blue demons sitting in both directions when coming off the stairs bad luck with the random generator or am I missing something. They are far more powerful than anything Ihave faced yet, and more numerous at the same time, its a huge spike in in difficulty, and thats why I ask.
If I start over with my character wont they be too strong? Or do monsters level with you?
Thanks!

The purpose of doing new game is to get stronger, you keep your characters, only levels reset - monsters don't become stronger, if you can't handle something, means you need to farm more

Thanks! thats too bad you have to reset the game to farm. Do people make it to the end without a reset or is this just how you play the game?. I hate it when dungeon crawlers get to easy and I will essentially be doubling my XP by the time I get to the same spot in a reset game. If you can make it to the end without a reset I might just start a new character and start over...

it's all about learning the game and being skilled
people have beaten this game without using a weapon / without going to town / you name it xD
Levels are randomly generated, so some are much easier than others. The stairs are supposed to be relatively quiet on your first entry to the level, although Caves sometimes breaks that rule by putting monsters in a fenced-in area. If you lead monsters back to the stairs, they will wait there for you to reenter, so that quiet entry happens only on your first attempt.

The experience mechanic won't let you double-up. Higher character levels require more experience to attain, so even if you acquired the same amount of experience again getting back to this point, you won't get double the character level. You won't get all that experience again though, because killing enemies of lower mlevel yields less than full experience. Depending on your current character level, you may not get any experience from some low level monsters.

First game finish - 21 character lvl. After reset and second attempt 23 character lvl ;)
thats too bad you have to reset the game to farm.
Thats main reason why i rate D1 higher than D2. You just cleansing lvl after lvl till you kill Diablo. Not just repetitively running from one good farming spot to another.
