A week ago or so, I asked David on Twitter if he would make a Diablo1 mod and he replied in one of his streams on Twitch that he could, but that he would rather create something that he can sell (lol? no passion for his past creations?). Mid chat his wife stopped him and said that if his current game "It Lurks Below" sold 4 million copies he would definitely make a mod and David agreed and promised it.

In a newer stream, David brought the number down to something more realistic. So that's 1M copies of "ILB" and we get a mod from the main creator of Diablo!

Who dosen't want a D1 Mod by D. Brevik? I DO! so i'm buying 4 copies now and giving it to my relatives lol. Just letting you all know.

There are 2 big mods for Diablo 1: The Hell and Belzebub. Plus variations. Tchernobog, The Hel 2. Everything else is light years behind. OK, The Hell is based on Hellfire, so it actually adds more content.

The Hell is deep mechanics, fixes, balance, challenge. "Try to beat me" type.

Belzebub is mostly a technological demo, looks. "Look what I can do" sort.

Different approach each but big mods nonetheless.

The Hell 1 was in development for 12 years. Belzebub took about 2 years.

David would have to make basically a new game to keep up with any of these mods.

It's easy to say it's from the creator of original game and sell it following Romero's footsteps, but concerning REAL quality of the product, it would have to be a one hell of a job for him to outshine The Hell 2 or Belzebub.

I have no doubt he actually can do better. And hell, I would love to play his mod. He knows how to create Diablo games : ) But it would take him more than one year to deliver a quality mod.

And if he just fixes a few small bugs and adds a few QoL features, music, animations and such, this would hardly feel new.

They're both great mods. I don't personally like them, but as a Skyrim modder i respect all the work put into them. David is a Profesional game creator and a workaholic when programing. He also got connections like Matt Uelman, the Schaefer brothers and Metzen. I think if it ever happens, he can create something extremely cool and in very short time period since he is familiar with the code. plus Devilution Open Souce Code would just hasten the process. He is been talking more and more about this possible "mod" in every stream, and he even mentioned how John Romero found a way to profit out of his "Sigil" Doom WAD mods, and how he could do something similar. He can't directly sell his mod, but he mentioned that he could call some some artists and create a fancy box with tons of goodies, then sell the box with the other stuff and and have a "Free" Disc or a Paper with a Link to Download the actual Mod. It seems to me that he has been thinking about how to profit out of it if he ever decides to do it. Anyway, i'm Just curious about what he would do. Also curious of his own vision of a modern Diablo1 mod. It might be simpler or even better than anything we already got from the modding community.
Romero is still a big name though, and with his wife are quite active in social media circles (instagram, FB). they are very popular amongst old school PC game collectors and is why the SIGIL box happened and as far as i can see well received amongst collectors.

what would be cool imo is a Diablo 1 "director's cut" but i guess Bezelbub already done that, or an old school collector's edition since i don't think D1 ever had one unlike Diablo 2. i don't know what sort of new extra content could be included though, i don't think D1 players are as enthusiastic about new mods as Doom WADs, Quake 1 maps or Thief fan missions, only a niche hardcore crowd plays these mods regularly.

instead of a mod on an old engine, i would rather see a new and dark 'Diablo' game in the vein of D1 but without calling it Diablo (since Blizzard.. but they have no rights over demon names from the Ars Goetia). plus going the indie route you don't have to make the game so family friendly.
There have been some Dia1 projects for Skyrim, like:

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/67266

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/21089

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/75935

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/75881

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/33618

But we don't know what happens if any project comes to something playable. Blizz was super aggressive on WoW based Skyrim mods, had lots of them on nexus and they are all gone.

Sadly it doesn’t work like this.
No one is familiar with code written a dozen of years ago, not even its original author.

Hey, I’m barely familiar with code I wrote last week ;)

Doing review on non-obfuscated code written by my colleagues is already quite time and energy consuming, I can’t even imagine how it is when your work on reverse-engineered code…

Spend a week cleaning up the render code, but now it should be much easier for the next person :)

Impressive work ;)
I guess the loading times improvements and uncapped FPS should be part of the 0.6.0 release?

Yes. But also hopefully widescreen support.
I wouldn't hold your breath on this happening one way or another, regardless of what his wife said.

Why do game companies not even do the slightest change for someone, no matter how small it is citing costs and how they are dying when not making obscene moneys, while you see individual people doing these mods without any compensation in their spare time. Take minecraft. To add one creature etc they won't even do it. Even Brevik requires $$$$ to promise anything. He won't go out and make mods like others, he wants money all the time. Also, when you look at Gygax for D&D, he did nothing afterward despite having ideas and could have done something.
