Salutations!

Let me lay it down for ya plain and simple. You should be playing Deus Ex. Why? Because it’s freaking awesome. Any SHOOTER that gives you the possibility of a nonlethal play-through deserves a your money. And if that’s not good enough for you, just read every other post about it on the internet, because this is not a guide to WHY you should play it, this is a guide for HOW you can play it. I just want you to know that having a Mac is NO LONGER a reason that you can’t play this game.

I love GOG. It’s one of my favorite websites of all time. I’m so thankful for the work that they do; they deserve some kind of humanitarian award. But sometimes, the games I want to play aren’t available on Mac yet. Deus Ex is one of them. I want to take a second to say a special thanks to Rampancy for his GOGmix “Mac Friendly/Open Source GOG Games”. Deus Ex is the first game on his list, and while I didn’t understand a word he wrote on there, it made me realize that it was possible to play this game on my Mac.

I’m not technologically illiterate, but I didn’t know jack-squat about running windows programs on my Mac (without BUYING software like CrossOver or Windows or Parallels, which I had no intention of doing). The internet is inundated with advice, overviews, and troubleshooting for how to generally play windows games on Macs (Rampancy seems to be our resident GOG expert. He’s a genius!), but nowhere in my searching did I find a single “how to play Deus Ex” set of instructions!

But, I decided to buy it during the Square Enix sale a few weeks ago, and try to FIGURE IT OUT. And you know what? After three days I DID figure it out, and when I did, I realized it was actually really simple, if you know what to do. So after playing it I decided to make a list of easy, step-by-step instructions so that the next poor fool who Googles “How to play Deus Ex on a Mac” can get it set up in 30 minutes instead of three days. Now, is this the ONLY way to play Deus Ex on your Mac? NO Does this way work? ABSOUTLEY. It works on my 2007 iMac and on my 2011 Macbookpro, so I’m sure it’ll work on whatever machine you have. If I’m wrong… Sorry.

I’m sure for some of you this is going to be baby talk, and I should be ashamed of how long it took me to figure out something so primitive, but there are loads of people like me who would LOVE to play this game, but simply don’t know how. And I’m going to include pictures. I can’t tell you how many times I thought to myself “WHY DON’T THEY JUST INCLUDE A FRICKING PICTURE?!?!?!” (visual learner here. I just hope the pictures aren’t too small, I was having some trouble.) Don’t be daunted by how long the instructions are, it’s long because I made it simple. Just take it slow and you’ll be UNATCO’s top agent in half an hour.

Alright. That was a whole lot of talking. Lets get down to business.

1. Purchase and Download Deus Ex from GOG. Doesn’t matter if you use the Downloader or not. You’ll be left with a file you can’t read.
2. Google “Wineskin Winery” and the first link should bring you here. [image 1] Go ahead and download it.
3. Take your downloaded “Wineskin Winery” and put it somewhere pretty, like your desktop or whatever. Then open it.
4. Now you need to install an engine. I read loads of different opinions on which engine you should use, and as far as I can tell… it doesn’t really matter… But like I said I just want to show you ONE way that works, not the ONLY way it works!
5. There’s a couple ways you can do this, but the way I’ll be demonstrating is by clicking “Download Packages Manually.” [image 2] Unfortunately at the time I’m writing this, the link is broken… So go back to that first downloads webpage I showed you and click the mediafire link in the “manually installed item downloads” box (see image 1).
6. Should take you to this page [image 3]. Let’s just get the newest one, which at the time is Wine 1.7.x (it’s highlighted in the picture).
7. Click on the link and scroll down to the newest version, which for me is “WS9WINE1.7.9-Installer.app.zip” Download it.
8. Take your downloaded file and open it, then click “install” on the Wineskin Installer.
9. BOOM now you have a new engine in your Winery. If it doesn’t show up, just close and open your Winery. Click on the new engine so it’s highlighted, and then click “Create New Blank Wrapper” [image 4]
10. Name your wrapper something cool like Rhyme-noceros or Hip-Hop-opotamus. JK. Name it something like Deus Ex, because this is what you click to play the game. Click “ok”
11. You’ll get some windows asking you to install “Mono” and “gecko”, but no on likes Mono, so just click “cancel” [image 5]
12. You’ve created a Wrapper! HOORAY! You probably want to “View wrapper in Finder” so you don’t have to search for it, then put it somewhere safe. Like your desktop. Then you can click “OK” and CLOSE your Winery and OPEN your new wrapper!
13. When opened, it should look like this. [image 6] Go ahead and click “Install Software”
14. Click “Choose Setup Executable” and find where you saved that Deus Ex file way back in step 1!!! Then choose/open it.
15. INSTALL IT LIKE A BOSS! [image 7]
16. Okay, we’re not done yet. Now we need to do some troubleshooting. That was the easy stuff, this is the part that actually took me a long time to figure out. Click “Launch Game” and you’ll be asked which 3D video device you want to use. My screen was glitchy using the suggested “Direct3D Support”, so click on “Show all devices” and chose OpenGL Support. [image 8] Now, I heard plenty of different opinions on which video device to use, but like I said, this worked on a 2007 iMac and a 2011 Macbookpro, so let’s give it a try.
17. Click Next, Next, and Run!
18. Alright, we’re almost there. Chances are your game will be too dark. Mine was, and I installed it several times and used different 3D devices on both computers. If you start the “training” and can’t see the door on the other side of the room, it’s too dark. The game takes place totally at night, so if you’re finding it hard to see in this well lit building, something ain’t right. Unfortunately because of things I don’t understand, you CAN NOT change the brightness level in game. Let me tell you how to fix it (this took me a long time to figure out).
19. Close the game and click “ok” on whatever pops up. You need to get back to the “new wrapper” box (see image 6). If you can’t find it, you need to RIGHT CLICK your wrapper (the one you named Deus Ex) and chose SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS. If you just double click, it will open the game (handy for when you feel like playing). There should be “contents” “drive_c” and “wineskin”. Open wineskin.
20. Hey! I recognize that little box! This time click “Set Screen Options” and you should get this. [image 9] Look at the “extra Gamma Correction” slider, and move it all the way from “none” to “very bright”. That’s what I did, if you don’t like it, then you can come and adjust it later, since you know where it is now :D (took me too long to find on my own…)
21. Click done, close that little box, and try playing your game again (double click your wrapper you created and named). This time it should be perfect.

You did it! You’re playing Deus Ex on your Mac! You’re awesome! Deus Ex is awesome! GOG is awesome! WHOOOOOOOO!!!!

I’ll admit that sometimes it’s a little glitchy starting up or closing down, but that’s kinda just life. Plus my iMac sucks, so that could be part of the problem. But the game itself runs perfectly and is 100% playable. I’ve only had it quit ONCE on me while I was actually playing.

Having problems? This is a forum isn’t it? Post your questions and comments and I’m sure someone smarter than me will be able to help you.

Liked my post? RATE IT UP YO.

My next endeavor was going to be Planescape: Torment, but GOG already Mac-ed it up for us, BECAUSE THEY’RE AWESOME.

Alright, that’s all for now.
Cheeriops.

Thanks for your guide! I have fallen at the first hurdle and cannot install the .exe via the Deus Ex wrapper - it comes up with a message saying "no new executables found" (see attachment). Any ideas about how to address this would be appreciated!

Does this happen at the end of the game installation process?

Thanks for your response! This happens at the beginning of the installation (i.e. it doesn't go any further than this), using Wineskin WS9 1.7.9. I'm running High Sierra (10.13.2).

Hmm, from that error message it seems like the game got installed, but the wrapper couldn't detect the executable for starting the game. You could try the following...

Double click your wrapper in the Finder while holding down the alt-key. This should open a window like image_6 of fredzillanator's comment.

Press the Advanced button.
This should open wineskin advanced settings with the Configuration tab selected (if not, choose Configuration from the three tabs at the top of the window).

Right below the tab bar is a text field called Windows EXE:, click the Browse button beside it. This will open a standard file dialogue of which the current directory should be drive_c.

(Now, if the game was not installed, the following stuff might not be there...)

Unless you changed the standard installation path there should be a GOG Games directory which contains a 'DeusEx' directory (not sure about the exact name). Go there and look for the System directory, which should contain the deusex.exe. Select deusex.exe and press 'Choose'.

Close your wrapper. Double click your wrapper in the Finder to start the game.

If everything went well you should be at point 16 in fredzillanator's list, right after clicking 'Launch Game' (which you didn't have to do).

Hi Can anyone help?
Ive bought Deus Ex through Steam on my MacBook Pro 2011 running High Sierra 10.13.5 but the steam app won't let me download or run the game obviously because it won't run the PC executable file. How can I just download the file?
Ive set up wineskin winery already on my desktop.....

Thanks!

I think you would have to run the Windows Steam client in a Wineskin wrapper and install and play Deus Ex through your wrapped Steam client. There is a Winetricks option to install Steam, but I've never tried it.

If you want to try to install Steam via Winetricks do steps 1 through 12 of fredzillanator's comment.

Then, after opening your wrapper click Advanced (see image_6).

Go to the Tools tab and click the Winetricks button directly below it. This will open the Winetricks window.

Type Steam into the Winetricks search field, check Steam under apps and then press the Run button.

From here on you're on your own... (^-^;

i also faced the same problem . you have to tweak your wineskin to make it run properly in high sierra or further . Follow the steps from this video, make sure you apply these settings to your freshly created wrapper and the game should install just fine . then you can follow the remaining steps . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDjWNWM3Y7w
enjoy the game!

I am getting the same issue...

How are you suppose to have the game installed on mac OSX... its an .exe.

GOG only allows the setup file to be downloaded (I had to manually download it off the website after purchasing, the app doesn't allow a windows installation on the app). I have the setup application. I don't know how to get the file to work
any idea what to do when it says it cannot install without the .NET framework?
well i have followed the instructions and i know this is years later but ... I got as far clicking install the Deux ex download and get 'Wineskin is currently busy place wait' well i'v waited ages so i am guess there is a missing link somewhere?

You'll need gcenx's wineskin [github.com] unless you're running a very old macOS version.

OK, I followed your link but not sure what to download (imagine i'm not a tech wizard!)

Well, if you don't know where to find the terminal, there may be no hope for you.

If you do, open it up and slap in the following: brew install --cask --no-quarantine gcenx/wine/wineskin
