I first played Dead Space on PS3 and didn't have any problems with it but when I got it for PC on steam, it was unplayable.

There is a strange problem with mouse sensitivity, if you aim close to a object (like down at the floor) the sensitivity is really low but if you aim at something far away (like a door at the end of a long corridor) the sensitivity becomes really high.

I remember contacting EA about this but I wasn't able to fix the issue, it as something to do with hardware compatibility

Years later, I tried to play the game again but set up to do so with a controller and not a mouse with v-sync on this time

Unfortunately a new problem occured before I could even test the aiming sensitivity, the camera spins uncontrollably left and up, you can notice something is wrong even before playing the game, in the main menu, the menus themselves are down and to the right instead of being centered

I haven't got the chance to play this game again because of all this crap

So does the GoG version fix all these problems?

Still, I don't really feel like buying the same game a third time...
There are problems with mouse controls. I've messed around with the settings enough to get acceptable results, but it seems to vary quite a bit depending on hardware. I tried using a controller too and that worked fine, I haven't seen any of the other problems you mention though.

But in short; no it doesn't fix all the problems, at least not mouse control, and I'm guessing this game hasn't been updated in years. Check out the other threads on this forum, they might give you an idea of what problems to expect.

I'm having the exact same problem - the "chase" camera view just keeps circling around the avatar. If I move the mouse counter to this orbit, I can get it to slow down and even halt, for a second, but then it just starts again. I have no problems with the mouse in any other game I play, so I can only conclude Dead Space is the problem.
I don't think so, but there's a mod to fix mouse input issues: http://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/840-dead-space-mouse-fix/
I have the Steam version too and I'm sick of people saying "Just use a controller and it's fine" because it isn't. I thought to myself "This can't be how this game is supposed to play" and so bought the PS3 version (on sale) which plays fine aside from a few framerate drops.

I started trying to play it a few days ago (on PC) and found the following problems:

Running with v-sync enabled introduces a lot of input lag that can be reduced by setting the amount of pre-rendered frames in your GFX card control panel, but it still isn't good.

With v-sync disabled it reduces/eliminates the input lag but does not address the deadzone problems and makes some lighting effects look as if the graphics are glitched due to extreme tearing.

Physics problems such as corpses tumbling or jiggling like they are being electrocuted (when they should be still).

The in game v-sync will half the fps from whatever refresh rate you select (60=30, 120=60 etc). Enabling v-sync from the control panel of your GFX card will produce the correct fps but does not address input lag and deadzone problems.

Dead Space 2 seems to lock the fps at 30 fps when v-sync is enabled which is fine for this game and I don't mind. The problem with Dead Space 1 is that different fps seems to affect the controller sensitivity, so it would be better if it were simply locked as it is in Dead Space 2 instead of halving the refresh rate.

The PC version is far too bright.

I'd imagine that a patch is out of the question at this late date. In my opinion people should steer well clear of the PC version unless they are willing to use third party fixes to play the game as it is intended. If people have the option they should go for one of the console versions which is a shame as the grapics on the PC version is more crisp and the PC has the potential of having a rock solid framerate too. With some minor fixes this would be the definitive version.

I agree, the PC port for this game is just awful. That seems to be the common consensus on this game. I'm only familiar with the Steam version and I came here hoping to find that the GOG version was in some way improved, but I'm sad to see that it's not.
The mouse sensitivity is a non-issue, that is merely a game mechanic like the 3rd person/side camera that you have to adapt to. You have to realize that "aiming" is NOT aiming. It is *zooming*, and reduced sensitivity is perfectly acceptable when you are zooming to shoot specific limbs off an enemy. The mechanic is NOT meant to be used for movement, and only used for zooming, so after you shoot an enemy, you immediately UNZOOM. "Problem" solved.

That said, there are REAL problems with this game, and that has to do with OS/Driver problems that can possibly crash the game, and glitch the graphics. There are also framerate/engine bugs, which I don't know if were ever fixed. Vsync may actually be necessary if your framerate is too high.
I just marathoned through the game, and I have to say the only issues Napalmhardcore mentions that I've seen are:

1. corpses tumbling/jiggling, especially at edges such as when half on a lift, but this is trivial

2. too bright: I definitely think it's meant to be darker, but I appreciated the brightness. I left it at default, which is decidedly bright, but I did notice that even with the brightness slider all the way down, it's still quite light for the genre.

That was it. Mouse took a while to get used to but eventually felt natural, even though I suspect a controller would be better. I did not change any graphics options from the defaults other than resolution. Sound was great, using stereo or 5.1. All of this was on Win7 on a not-very-new system. I didn't have a single crash, which astonished me, especially as I was alt-tabbing in and out pretty frequently.
Having just finished the game first time, I must say that this game is great.

But only if you get the two important mods for it. You need to get the mouse input fix mod and the widescreen fixer. You also need to set the max FPS to 60 in your video card driver settings. Otherwise the game is completely unplayable garbage.
Dead Space is a great game, however with issues. Same as others you need to turn off Vsync in the game and limit the game to 60 FPS in the graphic driver control panel. Game too bright? solution is to set the Window.Gamma to a value of -0.5 in the games setting.txt file found in Users - AppData (hidden folder) - user name - Local - Electronic Arts - Dead Space

Thanks for this. The game was ignoring and overriding my desktop/monitor gamma settings and was too bright even at minimum brightness. I knew about the setting.txt file, but only used it to unlock Impossible difficulty without finishing the game.

This value moves the in-game brightness slider, but it allows going into negative values, which you can't do in the in-game settings.
