There might be some spoilers in here, so don't read further if that bothers you.

I really like the Darksiders series, so it was a no brainer for me to pre-order Darksiders III, but had I known that this game isn't anywhere near enjoyable than the first two I would never have bothered with it.

I started playing DS3 in Normal difficulty and after some minutes I thought I got it. I could beat Envy rather easily and most of the other mobs I encountered too. It took me a while to get that flame boss down, from which Fury gets here flame appearance. After several tries and using all I got I was able to beat him too.

[rant mode on]
But now I almost die at some stupid skeletons and surely die fighting one of those lava brutes, that I already was able to beat once, and it didn't feel hard at all the first time. Now whenever I try to dodge, that guy still hits me and even in Story mode, one hit from it drains almost two thirds of my whole life. At first I thought something didn't work right while switching to Story mode, so I checked and well... the game was set to Story mode. Then I thought, I'm doing something wrong while dodging, but it seems that dodging works fine too.

I read some other posts over at the steam forum and several others had the same problem. Most of them compared DS3 to Darksouls, a game I really didn't ever play and didn't want to play. So now I have a Darksouls clone that I can't even play in Story mode and paid alot of money for.

Thanks alot Gunfire Games... I hope you change that stupid Story mode to something that is worth the name and description.
[rant mode off]

And please, spare me the replies telling me, that the game is good as it is and if it is too hard for me I should play Minecraft or something like that. If i wanted to play on hard difficulty I could switch to one of the two harder modes. But I mostly want to enjoy the story, just as in the previous Darksiders games. And as it stands right now, I won't be able to enjoy the game at all...

There's a chance switching to story mode after starting the game on a higher difficulty might be bugged. I would suggest trying starting a new game on Story and seeing if it's any easier. The skeletons and other enemies that are in the area you're plonked into after getting the flame form were tough for me at first, too (I also play on Story, because I play games to have fun, not to be "challenged"), but they got way easier after I leveled up a bit. I'd suggest using a serpent hole at the Vulgrim spot at the start of the area to warp back to Earth and try exploring some other areas to gain some souls and combat experience, and upgrade your weapons if able to. Nice thing about this game is that it's not completely linear, so there's other areas to explore.
I agree the damage you take and style they've chosen to pursue is very Dark souls inspired.

Have you used your souls to upgrade your stats, and the slivers to upgrade your equipement? Like dark souls, you get clusters of souls you can pop and use to feed vulgrim(level up) and buy items.

As little moves as there are, they all serve a purpose too. Holding down attack with whip does a wide sweep, good for CC, and the delay combo with whip is good siongle targer damage. Also don't forget wrath attacks. I didn't use wrath for a while because I never got the notification on how to use it early on, and that was a big help on tougher fights.

Unlike you (I'm not putting you down here, do what you enjoy) I like challenge in my games so I'm playing on one of the harder difficulties. But I feel like some enemies, specifically those skeletons that are grouped up in that first area are stupid over powered.

They're relentless in their attacks and they can attack you even through moves that are from what I can tell supposed to be guard breaks which you'd think would inherantly stun enemies, but nope. Those fuckers can still attack you through air knock ups and any other combination of attacks. Even in wrath mode wihch doesn't seem to come with any sort of damage reduction.

Which leads me to my next main issue. There doesn't appear to be -any- iframes on dodge. So unless you're perfect dodging every attack there is still and extremely good chance you'll be hit, especially if you're facing more than one enemy like those skeletons. Which can also attack you from off screen.

Iframes on dodge is a pretty important mechanic of Dark Souls games and it's completely absent here. Wihch is *really* weird for a game that is very obviously drawing heavy inspiration from that series.

I want to like this game. I really do. But this is going beyond challenging and slipping into unfair terrirtory. I've spent more time back tracking because of what I feel are unfair deaths than I have progressing through the game and that's really saying alot considering I beat both the first 2 Darksiders games on the harder difficulties without any real issues.

In Darksiders II for example I would have no issue what so ever trying to fight higher level enemies but those skeletons, which should not really present any real challenge are broken.

I hope the rest of the game gets better but I'm a pessemist by nature.

Thanks for all the polite replies so far.

I tried to use up all the souls I gather as soon as possible, in order to stay leveled up. I didn't think of going back to previous areas though. I will try that. If that doesn't work, I'm going to start a new going and choose Story mode right from the beginning. Maybe there is a bug. And yes, I also tried different combos on the mobs, but this didn't really work for me.

Im not really familiar with Darksouls and so I'm not sure what those iframes are, but I think it is some sort of delay in movement, so you can time your counter/dodge or whatever right? That could help if you fight only one mob, but if there are more, like the skeletons it won't be of much use I guess.

I like how Fury is portraid in the game, I like the areas so far, I don't mind being brought back to Vulgrim on every death (yet), so I hope I will somehow figure out a way to play this game...

Thanks again for the tips and your own insights.

Iframes are immunity or invulnerable frames. In the Souls series when you dodge and depending on your stats and a number of other factors you are immune to all damage and interuption when dodging.

Something that is completely missing from Darksiders III because I've been hit any number of times mid dodge.

It makes taking on a group of enemies that can attack fairly quickly a fun and strategic experience that you get better at while progressing through the game as you learn enemies behaviors and attack patterns.

In Darksiders III it's a crap shoot. You might dodge. You might even get a perfect dodge. But either way you're still going to get hit and there's nothing you can really do about it aside from just running by clumped up enemies.

Oh yeah. This game is prone to crashing too. Just beat Avarice minutes ago and after the cut scene immediate crash. Good times.

Also, the boss fight was actually fun and only took a few times to get through. Unlike the trash mobs I had to slog through to get to him...

Edit: Looks like I lost my game progress due to that crash and have to beat the boss again. Super good times.

Edit 2: The best worst part is that a lot of the attacks enemies use track you too. Which makes me question the usefulness of dodge even more..

Edit 3: Enemies that track your dodge that doesn't have iframes and you can get stuck on terrain which means the chances of being hit by attacks you should have dodged goes up even more. I'm questioning my purchase more and more with every group of enemies I encounter.

Lie. Haven't seen this in the game, and I end it on apocalypse diff. You can easily dodge any attack, when you know their pattern. And yes, some enemies has a combo attack, which goes in 2-3 sweeps. Of course you will be hit by next attack, just dodge in other direction................
And yes, just spend souls, you have collected, AND lurchers in your inventory. Upgrade your stats and weapons. Collect runes and save humans. All in all, you will be able to oneshot low lvl enemies and ignore their dmg almost completly.

There certainly are i-frames on dodge. Later you even get a weapon enhancement that increases those i-frames as a passive (25% when fully upgraded), and it's really noticeable improvement in survivability.

I'm playing on normal and I don't think I ever had trouble with the skeleton crowds that OP mentions. They can't block, and as long as you press your attack, they crumble after few hits. But there is one skeleton captain who CAN block mixed in that crowd, which can really mess things up if you treat him like others. He could easily kill me even when alone when I first visited this area. The key is bit of kiting and thinking (wait until he turns his back and goes downhill before rushing in to kill the trash). And maybe switching to flame hollow, game doesn't hint about it and I used a whip for a long time after I should have switched. Take some time to learn to use it - it has shorter range and different feel. So, don't put too many resources into whip. Flame hollow hits multiple times in one swing, and has better base power for the same upgrade level. At level 30-something I'm using flame hollow with life drain to fight, and whip only to break objects (it has the enhancement to generate souls from breaking objects equiped) and if I need super long range (like those annoying spider statues).

I don't believe I said otherwise.

What I said was you can still be hit while dodging which is a true and I'm not the only one who is taking issue with this.

If a sweep from right side to left and you dodge in left direction, it will hit you. It's obvious.
I've never faced it, 29 hours of gameplay. So what i did wrong?
Me again... So I "trained" Fury a bit and finally was able to kill that lava guy. I even got some dodges right... :D It seems it was my fault not recognizing this game for what it is and how it might be played. Those skeletons still are a pita, but I simply ignore them now and run past them.

I think I learned my lesson: If a mob is too hard, just go back to a previous area and gather souls and level up Fury.

I still get hit a lot but maybe I'm just too old for this type of dodging.

Have fun all ;)

I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to.

If we're talking about the lava guy then I didn't have any issues with him. My problem is with groups of enemies that attack relentlessly.

The bosses and bigger enemies all seem fine so far, up to beating Avarice.

Aaah, multiple enemies. Well, i prefer to play stratigicly and use a lot for CC, like wraith and large swings.
Without Tempest better keep fighting 1vs1.
Also, with Force Hallow it will be much easier with a group of them (even with Demon warchiefs in the late game)

When you will get Force Hallow and rune of Fortification, it will be much safer for you. Also, push health a bit farther, than damage.

Though I'd let you know: there's a patch in the works that will make Story mode more forgiving. It's currently being beta-tested on Steam, but it'll come over here once all the kinks are worked out!
Hi, just got the game, but I still have to install it, so I'm interested about the argument.

Do the last patches solved those combat difficulty issues ?

I see that in the changelogs are reported some balance corrections and immunity during some kind of attacks.

I never played DarkSouls but I think to have understood the concept of the combat system.
