The Activision game Dark Reign 2 is now open source under the LGPL. Since you can now download the complete game for free perhaps Gog.com will add this as another free game to their growing library? The site even provides the developer serial key, and notes that added support for multiplayer is a desire for the project.

Directly from the site:
"This project wants to add multiplayer support for the game "Dark Reign 2" again! The source is available and yes: it's the full game.

You can download the compiled game from the source tab > full_game.

Note: to compile the project you will need Visual C++ 6.0 (SP1) <- does not work on vista and 7

Looking for a pro C++ programmer to help edit the networking components. We need a working multiplayer ! :D

If you need anywhere to put a serial use the developer serial: GAD6-TEB4-CUP9-PAP6-5529"

someone knows more about the legal status? Still unclear it seems... at least the source code is available and gog can now fix things easily ;)

shaddim: someone knows more about the legal status?
Yep, it’s totally illegal.
That’s why I *didn’t* copy the source on my hard drive just in case it get removed from the Internet ;)

You have a confirmation for this this claim? Some connection to the originally guy/developer who released it? Would be highly interested in sources and the story here...

Up to know I have not seen no proof for the speculation and spreading rumour that this was an unauthorized leak ...

The proof is in the code source itself, with some headers explicitly forbidding any kind of publication.

Could be an oversight while being a valid release, similar what happend on the Raven source code release with Jedi Knight. Raven forgot to remove some third party source codem, which was later removed by the community making the source code copyright safe again.

Might be the case of course, but don’t you think in this case we would have seen some kind of official release of the source code?

Only hint we have outisde of the code itself is here:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4350254

Doesn’t sound in the favour of the legality of the source code release, don’t you think? ;)

Anyway, none of this should discourage you to study the source code!
I’d love to see some kind of clone of Dark Reign 2 coming alive, cross-platform and open-source…

I know this one, but I'm looking for a more conclusive connection than a second hand interpretation from a anonymous guy on the internet... the guy/developer who did the leak/release would be of interest as he hopefully could tell an interesting story & give a motivation... and in best case making the release legal

You might be able to contact him via the e-mail address provided there:

Please report here if you manage to learn anything more.

Same problem here, with Iceweasel/Firefox, QupZilla & Midori… Looks like the system is broken.
Should I find the full e-mail by any mean I’d forward it to you.
