Well, this review may answer my previous question. By mothwentbad, on store page.

1. Linux version available elsewhere. (Fix in progress y/n?) 2. Soundtracks, digital art, making-of sold as DLC. (Fine, I wouldn't waste money on them myself either, and I think it's dumb. I'd downvote the DLCs themselves if anything, though) 3. Game is reported to have issues running without Galaxy at the moment. (Judas is aware of this. Fix probably in progress, but I'm not 100% sure)
The game itself has been on Steam for a long time, and it easily speaks for itself. It's a unique, challenging, well-done game with even more challenging alternate characters (including a "turn based" character for those who need time to think or want an easier mode). If you aren't concerned about points 1-3 above, then I personally don't know of any other reason to shy away from this title.

So the game according to this commenter doesn't work well without Galaxy on Win/Mac which Ryan does allude to.

We've been working on the GoG version of the game ever since we launched on Steam. It has literally taken us that long to work out all of the kinks. (We expected it to only take a few days!) It has been a slog. So once we finally got it working on Win+Mac and realized that there is no Linux version of Galaxy, we were faced with a choice:

As a fellow developer I do feel for him when the code *should* only take a little work and it doesn't. As a GOG consumer I am troubled. I do thank him for being transparent and unlike some of the other posters in the forum I believe he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Ryan, with that said, I would *highly* recommend posting a beta in GOG and asking for help on r/linux_gaming. We are not toxic like the Steam forums and the quality of bug reports you will get is much higher from Linux gamers. Just ask Devolver Digital. GNU/Linux is a community and should reach out for help. Thankyou.

Normally, I'm quite keen on pitchforks and torches, but perhaps we should go a bit easier on the devs here. They have been making Linux versions of all their games to this point after all. And they are actually being open with us, which is more than you can say for 95% companies even most idie studios...

Anyway, it seems like putting out a version without the features that rely on Galaxy for now would be the best approach.

BraceYourselfGames: Hi all! I'm Ryan Clark, the creator of Crypt of the NecroDancer.

I'm a big supporter of Linux games, and every independent game I've created (8 so far) has had a Linux version. Hopefully you can see that I'm on your side :) However, I'll let you know that I make Linux games only because I want to support Linux gamers. Less than 1% of the revenue from my games comes from Linux, and yet more than 10% of the technical support issues come from Linux. For small games and small companies like ours, that 1% of revenue just isn't enough to justify the effort of creating a Linux and supporting a Linux build.

Instead, we do this because we want to support Linux gamers. As a result, it is always a bit disheartening to have Linux gamers get upset at us, despite our best efforts. (In the "Release: Crypt of the NecroDancer" thread, one user even suggested that we have our heads up our asses.)

We've been working on the GoG version of the game ever since we launched on Steam. It has literally taken us that long to work out all of the kinks. (We expected it to only take a few days!) It has been a slog. So once we finally got it working on Win+Mac and realized that there is no Linux version of Galaxy, we were faced with a choice: Spend even MORE time to rework the Linux version to remove Galaxy, the leaderboards, the achievements, and deliver a crippled version of the game, or we could wait until Galaxy comes to Linux and use the same code base as Win+Mac, and deliver the best possible version of the game.

I can certainly understand your frustration that our game is not yet available on Linux! But please do try to see things from our side, too. We are a small company. We want to support Linux gamers, despite the fact that it makes little financial sense for us to do so. We intend to post a Linux build if/when Galaxy becomes available on Linux. We hope that you can forgive that delay.

Thank you!
Yeah, it's a bit funny seeing Galaxy consists of a seemingly good amount of qt5 and other open-source projects, yet the client is lagging behind by months. :P Oh well, looking forward to try gog and perhaps play your game soon since I'm done with Steam, it's a terrible Linux client. Most of us understand. But you can certainly understand the frustration, take it with a smile. It just shows they at least were interested in the game. :)
Let's put it in a simpler manner (note I am not a Linux user).

When the devs say, and correct me if I'm wrong, that they haven't enough resources, it is useful to detail that they don't have enough resources... to correct the design decision they made at the start of the dev.

Hopefully, they'll be willing to put a little bullet named "don't overcomit to a specific technology for the distribution of a game" in their "lessons learned" document.

Also, I hope gog learns it too because they have let a "drm" go through their distribution service, it's as simple as that. Without the client, nobody can PLAY the game, making it a mandatory client in earnest.

Well said.

okay.

tacticalbread: okay.
Not bad. Nevertheless, there is nothing "entitled" in criticizing treating GOG users as second class citizens (in comparison with Steam ones).

Hi everyone,

The Linux version is indeed now available. As requested, I disabled the achievements and leaderboards so that it can work without Galaxy. A big thank you to GoG for posting the build ASAP for us.

I worked on my weekend time to create this build. I did it for those of you who expressed your opinions and frustrations in a positive manner. As I said, I am on the side of Linux games, and I appreciate those of you who were understanding! Thanks!

Thank you for your efforts. Most appreciated.
Even though I have been rather cynic in some of my remarks, I feel compelled to buy your game straight away.
Note that I still have the same stance towards Galaxy and any social media features.
Bought.
Thanks again and a belated welcome to GOG.
