I'm still coming to grips with CPT2 (I've played other games in the genre before but I'm new to this one) and after finishing the game I decided to install the Apolyton mod as its highly recommended. I've heard that the AI isn't too strong in the base game and is beefed up in Apolyton but it seems like its to an absurd degree. I'm barely able to found a few cities and they've already taken the entire map. Slavers keep stealing my pop way before I can research abolition and they have a ton of improvements on the map. They have a ton of military units, wonders, and have machine gun infantry by 300 A.D.
I know I'm not THE most effective player, but I'm literally on the easiest difficulty and its clear the AI is cheating (I'm aware that the base AI probably also cheats just due to the hardware at the time and complexity of coding AI for a 4X game) to an absurd degree and honestly ruins the point of playing this game for me. What's the fun if I feel like I can't even get out of the ancient era before the AI already has nearly the entire map? I can't possibly build settlers fast enough, let alone the research, improvements, wonder, and the military units.

Am I missing something obvious? Extra config that I can do? A game mechanic that's clearly going over my head that I'm expected to be taking advantage of? Or should I just go back to Vanilla?

I feel like I'm expected to know the mechanics and exploits by heart before playing against this AI and not only am I not there, but I don't even feel like that's a goal of mine.

The build of Apolyton I'm using is a 2011 build as its the only link I've found to it so far.

I'm pretty sure the 2011 build is the very last to date. As far as I can tell, the website faded from the limelight shortly before that.

The CURRENT working download link for Apolyton Edition mod
http://ton-hur.mbnet.fi/files/ctp2/

Might be the same thing as changelog
2011-06-12 (Revision 1111)
ive played call to power for a very long time, trust me, any mod is better than the original for ai balance and power.
that apolyton mod is pretty awesome, but i was able to handle that after a while. if there some thing thats better than it or helps remake the game , let me know, i gave up the game after i could play and beat it all in one day on any settings.

doing a slaver pop steal in the beging is over powered. u should be usining it. . build some military, some slavers and suround all the enemy units u can. every square around them. luanch a attack then cancle it before the first hit. you have just stolen a slave. and didnt hurt any thing. do it with 8 around one enemy unit and thats 8 pop a turn for one unit.

imagine doing that to 5 enemy units.... or even 15

Well, there is the Source Code Project. This one, not the other ones.
