I know there are multiple threads about issues with this game's graphics, and I apologize for starting another, but I'm having lots of problems, and I'm not very savvy about these things.

I tried playing yesterday. Before starting the game, I turned the resolution to maximum, and turned on anti-aliasing and high-quality shadows. It ran at the proper speed, but there was a lot of flashing and flickering, and the status indicators in the upper left-hand corner were a bit glitched. I realized that the game didn't support widescreen, so I quit in order to change the aspect ratio, only to find that I no longer had the option, as the drop-down menu for resolution in the launcher had gone blank.

I fiddled with the other settings to try to stop the flickering, but when I tried running the game again, the graphics were so choppy and slow that the video of the opening cutscene ran minutes longer than the audio. I continued fiddling, and at some point, the option to change the resolution came back, briefly. I turned it down to 800 x 600, but that did nothing to help the performance. I did manage, somehow, to stop the graphics from running too slow; now they run too fast, instead.

The strange thing is, I had tested the game out for about half an hour back when I bought it, one year ago, and I don't recall any of these problems. The only change I've made to my PC since was to replace the hard drive with a solid-state drive, so even though my hardware isn't very good, I don't think it's the problem.

Are these problems that can even be fixed by the settings? I've seen various recommendations to manually edit .ini files or replace .dll files, but I'm wary about changing things at that level.

This is what worked for me hopefully this might help you. This is not my fix . It is from another gog user.
I also used the widscreen mod from nemesis2000

This solution requires changes in the NVIDIA 3D application settings. To find these settings, right-click your desktop and open the NVIDIA Control Panel. In the Control Panel, go to Manage 3D settings, and open the Program Settings Tab. The game specific options should show themselves after searching for BGaE.exe. For BGaE.exe, try the following settings:

Antialiasing Mode = Override any application setting
Maximum pre-rendered frames = 1
Monitor Technology = Fixed Refresh (not available for everyone, G-Sync related)
Texture Filtering - Negative LOD bias = Clamp

Next, the following options have to be set in the SettingsApplication.exe located in your local game folder. Here, in the advanced settings, try the following settings:

disable 'Triple Buffering'
disable 'Fastflip'
leave rest enabled or at maximum

Thanks to ancalimon of the GoG forums and to Monkey Tommo for reporting this fix here.

Monkey Tommo ran the game on a GTX 1080 with an i7 3770k and Windows 10 x64.
This fix was also reported to work with a GTX970 and an AMD FX8350 with Windows 10 64x Pro.

Thank you for the advice. The trouble is, I don't have an Nvidia graphics card. I have an AMD Radeon HD 7850. I did go into the AMD Radeon settings and add BGE.exe to the games list, but the only setting I see that's exactly equivalent to the ones you listed for Nvidia is the Anti-aliasing Mode = Override application settings. There is a setting for Texture Filtering Quality, but the options are High, Standard, and Performance, nothing about LOD bias. And I don't see anyting about pre-rendered frames or fixed refresh.

Does anyone know what the AMD settings should be?

Also, could the problem be my processor? Mine is quad-core, and I've seen some people say that can flummox older games. I've seen mention of a utility called ImageCFG, which would assign the game to a single core.

Oh sorry I don't know about amd graphic cards hopefully you might find a solution.
I do not think that the cpu is your problem because I have one of the worst cpu amd fx 6300 and didn't have a problem.

Maybe you should contact support because they helped me a lot of times and maybe they have a solution for it.

Hopefully you can fix the game because it is an amazing game
