This is about the Incubation+The Wilderness version. The forum wouldn't let me edit the title... :/

I bought the Platinum edition of this fine game only to run into an application error that I can't seem to be able to solve.
You will be able to see the error message in the file attachment, but also for the sake of SEO and that it may be easier to troubleshoot the issue, here' s the error message in full:

Title: Application Error
Description: Exception EInOutError in module launcher.exe at 00012F8D. I/O error 32.

I haven't had any luck with lmgtfy.com and my attempts at trying to somehow circumvent this have been in vain. Do I _have_ to run this through a VM?.... Really?

Any assistance/help is appreciated.

This is normally about "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

So, could your Antivirus, WIn it self or similar.

It is unfortunate a rather vague error.

But, did you install directx9.0c?

So, this got me thinking about checking out what Task Manager says about Battle Isle when I run it.

What happens is that:
* Battle Isle will make an attempt at starting, showing up in Task Manager as Incubation (32 bit)
* The application push up the CPU to about 30% and stays there
* No windows appear

If I try to start the application again, the error reported above appears. This is all well, considering that the application is already running.

What is weird is the behaviour of the application when I launch it either for the first time after a boot or when I've killed it using Task Manager.

I've tried different settings in Windows for compatibility, but it's giving me no solution.

Anyone have any hints on this one?

You didn't answer!

Yeah, i just simply forgot about it in between my tests.

It's not possible to install DirectX 9 in Windows 10 through the web installer. Windows won't allow it beause it states there is already a newer or equivalent version installed. The one DirectX package that allowed to install was the June 2010 one http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 , but I have no idea if that contains the DirectX 9 you're referring to. How do I check?

It is a bit hidden:

Go to the second page (Shall be called display) and on the middle right hand side you can see which featurelevels are supported, i.e. 11.1,11.0,.....and it shall say 9.1 2 and 3 as well.

This way you can also determine for newer games what you really have ;)

Yeah, so what the list says on the Display tabs is:

12.1,12.0,11.1,11.0,10.1,10.0,9.3,9.2,9.1

So, if I understand this right I have DirectX 9 from .1 to .3. Still no dice on launching the game successfully though. Which is a shame. Any other thoughts about this? Or I would just have to accept the situation and run it in a VM.

Thanks for any additional comments.

EDIT: Ok, just started Incubation on W8.1 with default and it works....

Just out of curiosity? Does your computer have a CD-Drive? (DVD or similar)

Might be part of the problem....

According to this thread:

http://www.gog.com/forum/battle_isle/incubation_crashes_on_windows_7

Virtual Clone drive would do the job....

Tried Virtual Clonedrive and reinstalling. To no avail. I wonder what the code actually is doing behind the scenes. Since it fires of a process that takes more or less 30% CPU and never changes.....

30 Percent sounds like it is doing something, but for any reason not displaying it (like one of those old error messages not being displayed, but still eating up CPU-load....

OK, sorry no more ideas. What is funny: the product-page is saying:

http://www.gog.com/game/battle_isle_platinum

Works on:
Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10)

So, I think you better open up a ticket with support, sorry that I couldn't help you further....
If it's any consolation, I've just discovered I'm in the same boat. If I come up with a solution I shall post it here. Symptoms are identical. Did you contact gog support?

It no longer says Windows 10. :-/

So they have taken it off......Bad GOG, you have already done a better job :(

one thing I stumbled across is in here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-gaming/dplaydll-is-missing-from-your-computer-try/cc1f9230-3cac-4793-a488-3d6ea967cedd?auth=1

dplayx.dll

MAYBE this might be related?
I purchased the game(s) before they pulled the win10 support for it (and a few other games). Seems i now have a useless piece of software. Love gog, love old games, but buyer beware at this point since the change was made after the fact and no notice sent to me about it.

I really don't see taking the risk of purchases in the future if things like this continue to happen.

I got Incubation running on Windows 10 after staying up way too late last night. Here's how: GOG uses a library called for some games to play back music from .ogg files instead of CD audio. A change in Windows 10 [url=http://www.gog.com/forum/star_wars_xwing_and_tie_fighter_series/working_with_windows_10]broke the library, and GOG hasn't shipped an updated version for Incubation. So I replaced its "sound.dll" with the "winmm.dll" from a GOG installation of Jedi Knight.

After that, it would display a black screen and immediately crash. That I fixed by running Incubation's GOG "Settings.exe" and switching from DirectX to 3Dfx mode, which uses the nGlide wrapper. Then I was able to launch the game and load into a mission without any apparent problems.
