I used to play BG1 and BG2 just fine on my old computer - a Windows XP model.

However, when using GOG on the new one, it seems - in both cases - as if the number 7 key is stuck down all the time.

When I try to make a new character, I cannot give him/her a name because the input box fills up with 7s all the time, so I have to accept a name of "7777777777777777777777777777777777777777777".

When I try to actually play, the screen drags away from the character towards the top left of the map all the time - so I'm not even looking at my character.

What's going on?

Try a new keyboard...you may have a sticking key. As for the other, try what has already been suggested--rebooting...;)

Take your face off the keyboard... ;)

In all seriousness though, if it were me I'd start by disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard then restart the PC. If that didn't work, try uninstalling the driver and let Windows re-install it. If there is still an issue, try another keyboard -- surely you have a another? Or a family/friend that can lend you one?

You might also try using compatibility mode (XP SP3) and running the game as an admin.

I'm assuming you are trying to play the original releases not the EE?

It's an input device driver glitch. It's very common, especially on systems that rarely get the benefit of a reboot, such as those that are always just put into sleep mode. It's why rebooting works.
