Hello everyone, I have just installed BG1/BG2 from GOG and while my BG1 copy opens perfectly, when I open BG2 the opening screens look like the attached image. I have a trail of visual artifacts that makes all text unreadable.

Is this a known issue, and does anyone know what I could do to fix it?

Also, I have uninstalled, and reinstalled BG2 once already.

If your on windows 8, try running setup-ddrawfix.exe & choose uninstall.

I am on Windows 8, so where would I find this file? Thank you.

I should also mention that I am running an ATI Radeon 4800 series graphics card. I could paste my dxdiag.txt info if it would help.

.
It's in your Baldur's Gate 2 directory if you have the GOG version.

Hmmm...attached is an image of my BG2 directory and all of it's files. Where am I missing this file?

DDrawFix is a third party mod. It was added to the latest updates of Baldur's Gate on GOG. So if you have an older version, or not the GOG version, you won't have it. You can get it here though.

Strange, I downloaded both off of GOG last week. Is the update newer than that? In which case, is a place to report the file not downloading properly?

Unless GOG have updated them again, you should have files named:
setup_baldurs_gate2_2.0.0.12.exe
setup_baldurs_gate2_2.0.0.12-1.bin
setup_baldurs_gate2_2.0.0.12-2.bin

Those are the files I downloaded in April of this year, and they have the DDrawFix included. Are yours named the same?

Here's what I have (attached). Those seem to be the exact same files.

That looks right. I suggest you uninstall BG2 from Control Panel, then when that's done re-run the setup and press the 'Options' button before you press 'Install', then make sure that 'Check files integrity before installation' is checked. The installer should run DDrawFix automatically at the end of installation.
I can only think that it doesn't get installed on Windows 8 (Hickory & I are on Win 7)
ddrawfix works for some with windows 8 & causes problems for others.
Try it & choose the option Force DirectDraw Emulation.
Another thing to try, is toggle the "use 3D Acceleration" option in bgconfig.exe (where you slide the hardware sliders up)
And make sure your using 32bit 2D Color Depth.

So it appears as though if I turn 3D acceleration off, everything works properly. Huzzah!

Now the question that I pose is, what will be effected with this turned off?

Thanks to you both for helping me work through this!

Good gaming, the vast majority of systems work better with it off.

You will only see a difference in things like animated smoke from chimneys. With 3D acceleration turned on the smoke will look pretty much as you would expect smoke to look. Without, it will look fake. Other than the odd thing like that, you are much better without it -- I always run without it.
