Hi all,

I'm stuck in this place and can't get out. I've awakened the mind flayers and have the collars fromt the machine that is supposed to control the mind flayers. For the life of me I can't figure out how to use the collars.

I put a collar in my quick slot and use it on a mind flayer just like a scroll or anything else. I get a sound indicating that the collar was used but the flayer won't follow me. Basically I can't figure out how to command the flayer to go and open a door as it is supposed to. Is there a trick to commanding them or have I run into a glitch?

Would appreciate any help.
You have to command the flayer to move, just like you'd command one of your party members. There's also another way to open those doors if you don't wanna bother using the collars...
eh, good luck with that place. I got stuck for a while there too.
But yeah just get control over few flayers and move them to open necessary doors or whatever.
Might be useful to keep a few different saves until you are out, if it gets nasty and confusing...
Yeah remember there were options there to deal with this place.
Not too helpful here but good luck :)
It's a horrible place. Mindflayers and their worse big brothers was without doubt my most hated enemy in that game. Felt so bloody cheesy. They can kill me in practically a second, and there is simply no way to defend yourself against them. Yes, there is a spell that helps (forget what it's called), but even then they can hit you on 20. Meanwhile, they were practically impossible to hurt with spells (Fuck knows I tried often enough with the cloudkill wands..... and everything else really), so you have to get into their faces to kill them off, or be somewhat lucky with ranged. Having a pack of summons in front of you can help take some of the heat off, but they tend to die quickly. It's a very, very tough place.

I never figured out how to control those mindflayers. Think I got the right equipment but simply forgot about the whole thing in chaos of the place. Thankfully there was another way to open the doors, though there are downsides to that trick....... I did it though, twice.

The room off to the right (where you get the liquid to wake up the slaves) has a respawning Mind Flayer in it. After you've freed the slaves, you can use the slave machine to make 4 control collars. The collars will allow you to charm any Mind Flayer, but it's easiest to get the respawning one as he's alone and you can easily sneak up on him. Then just walk him over to the doors that need opening, and voila!

As for actually fighting them, Mind Flayers are why I always stockpile potions of Genius and Mind Focusing earlier in the game. I use a character in full plate + shield, use Chaotic Commands/Greenstone Amulet/Briny Potion, and a stack of those INT-boosting potions, and send them off ahead of the others. That way, the one character can absorb all the psionic attacks (since they're immune) and all the hits (since they have great AC) and everyone else can stand back and launch rocks at them. Hits that manage to get through can be counteracted with the potions, and since the INT drain only lasts 30 seconds but the potions last for hours, you should only need a few of them. Just wait for the drain to go away before moving forward again.
