I've been playing through BG for the first time, and been enjoying it. Now, though, I've reached the final fight with Sarevok, and am simply being crushed. My party is the canon one: myself (a fighter/cleric dual class), Imoen (dual classed to mage), Jahiera, Kalid, Minsc and Dynaheir. I'm playing in BGT, and am about 10k xp above the 161k cap of TotSC. I've heavily buffed my party, using all the potions which are likely to be of use which I have. However, all the 'tactics' for the fight which are online consist of the cheesy 'pull one member at a time' method, or swamping Sarevok with summons (which is impossible due to the cap introduced, it seems, in TotSC). I haven't managed to get him below 'injured'.

I've been casting Web and Cloudkill on the area where Sarevok is and waiting until they move forwards to attack in response, fireballing the area in the meantime, which has been...somewhat effective, but doesn't have much effect on Sarevok beyond delaying him. I've been emptying wands of fire in Scorcher mode at Sarevok when he reaches my view range, and Jahiera's been using my Wand of the Heavens on him. I've tried various things with my other party members: toe to toe combat (fairly suicidal: he outdamages me, especially if a couple of his party manage to get through the cloudkill web), spreading out and shooting at him, dodging when he came towards me (sounds good, but the limited space and other enemies around made it even worse: he killed my two mages before I'd had a significant effect, and then the rest of his side turned up...), and using summons to buy time (which he killed faster than I could summon them, and meanwhile the I was having fireballs cast on me).

I haven't been using many magic missiles, as I used them up earlier and it hasn't really made sense from an rp perspective to take a nap while chasing after Sarevok, but I can do that if that's what's needed.

Either way, though, I'm going to sleep on the issue and if anyone has any tips for fighting him without using the cheap methods I mentioned at the top, I'd be glad to hear them. Thanks!

EDIT: I've just realised I missed one buffing spell: protection from evil. I don't think that'll give me the win on its own, though.

This question / problem has been solved by Hickoryimage
First, and foremost, keep your main character away from Sarevok, especially as you have F/C, and your best weapon is a +2 hammer. Sarevok is just too damned dangerous in melee to risk your F/C. Khalid, Minsc (Spider's Bane for the webs) and summons will have to keep him at bay, and don't even bother with magic against him: his magic resistance is just too high. Use your mages to take out their mage (Dispel is extremely useful here). Don't bother with fireball either, as all of them have protection from fire, since Angelo fires Arrows of Detonation, meaning your team must have lots of Protection from Fire (potions, scrolls, spells). Taking Angelo out early will also aid you immensely. Bottom line is if you concentrate on Sarevok only, you will lose.

I've been bringing Minsc up the dual wielding route, so giving him Spider's Bane is out of the question, but he (and my main PC) have rings of free movement, which should produce the same effect?

However, I'm not clear on how to actually beat Sarevok after killing his allies. Just keep him at bay with the methods you mentioned (Khalid has a couple of uses of the chalice from Durlag's tower left, and is immune to the curse due to having Kiel's helmet, which should help his survivability) and shoot at him until he dies? And is it worth using the wand of the heavens on him with Jahiera once all his allies are dead, as opposed to shooting at him with a sling/attacking with the quarterstaff of striking?

In fact, will the quarterstaff of striking be a significant help in this battle?

Yes, Rings of Free Movement will act like Spider's Bane.

You have it: keep him at bay and use the best bows/crossbows/slings and the best arrows/bolts/bullets you have -- he has -20 AC and 999 HP. The Wand of the Heavens is a Flame Strike weapon, so don't bother. THe Staff of Striking is a +3 weapon with +9 damage bonus, and has a long reach, so Jaheira could stand behind Khalid, so yes absolutely use it. Just be aware that fully charged it only has 25 hits before it vanishes. And give Jaheira a potion of Strength before using it, because it also adds strength bonus.

Edit: Don't forget to give your archers potions that increase DEX for that extra THAC0.

I think the main issue is that you have only two people in your group that can use bows (Khalid and Minsc). Are they using bows, or did you basically make them tanks?

In general a good tactic is take one down at a time using Arrows of Dispelling and Detonation If these are coming from different corners, it is fairly easy.

If you have a dual cleric/fighter, the strongest weapon your character can use is the Staff +3 that you can buy in Ulgoth's Beard.

If you already dual-classed in BG1, then the hitpoints of your main character are probably only around 70?

The easiest way is to give your characters the boots of speed. Further give him also some Oil of Speed. Also cast protection from fire onto your character.

Take first out all his support character 1:1. Watch out for the doom guards which are spawning on the right side (you might want to keep in on the left side.

Cast Protection of Fire on your character. Shoot with Khalid or Mins either Arrows of Detonation or Piercing at Sarevok. Have Dynaheir use a wand of fire, same with Imoen. Jaheira doesn't really have too much she can contribute, maybe give her a sling. Your character I then guess will give him the final blow at the end.

I actually have three people who can use bows: you missed Imoen. Nice perk of having been a thief originally. Khalid is an archer, albeit somewhat suboptimally built (I put too many points into large swords early on), while I've been using Minsc as a tank

I don't actually have a +3 staff, but have been using a shield anyway and building my character around that (I later found out it may be a bit suboptimal, but didn't want to change my character so drastically with Shadowkeeper). I could use the staff of striking myself, I guess, if that would be better, but that would leave Jahiera with no powerful weapons at all as she can't use my +2 warhammer. I don't suppose Sarevok classes as giantkin for the +1/+4 warhammer? :P

I dual classed quite late (7th level, for the extra 1/2 attack), and in fact wouldn't have regained my abilities in bg1 if it wasn't for the removal of the bg1 level cap with bgt. My high con also helped, so I actually have a pleasant 99hp.

Based on what Hickory said, though, wouldn't they be resistant to arrows of detonation? Sarevok also doesn't just want to charge at my main character and ignore everyone else: if he did, it would be rather easier and I could just dodge with my main and attack with everyone else. Instead, he keeps changing who he attacks when I run away, and it seems like I have to interrupt everyones' actions to make them run before they finish them.

And is all magic more or less useless on Sarevok, then? Should I even bother with the cloudkill/web opening?

pi4t: Based on what Hickory said, though, wouldn't they be resistant to arrows of detonation?
Yes, they are. Don't bother. Use Arrows of Biting, Acid Arrows, Ice Arrows. Arrows of Piercing, while sounding good, do absolutely no damage if they get their save. There is no save against Ice Arrows, and Arrows of Biting will interrupt their mages, as will Acid Arrows.

Please tell me you wouldn't want it any other way?

Magic is not absolutely useless on Sarevok, it is just a complete waste given his very high resistance. On the other hand, the Cloudkill/Web opening will do a lot for you against Sarevok's cronies... just not him.

Of course I prefer it as it is (acting with a modicum of intelligence) to the AI I described, but DFilor appeared to be advising me to focus on speed buffs with my main character, as if he'd have to do a lot more running than anyone else. I was wondering if that was how DFilor thought he'd act.

The Boots of Speed will not help you against Sarevok: he is permanently hasted... un-dispel'able. He uses a unique equipped item. In other words, he will match you step-for-step.

The cap is not introduced by TotSC, but by the BG2 engine used by BGT.
One of the reasons I don't play with BGT ;)

[/my 2 cents]
Well, I finally beat it, thanks to your help. Ironically, most of his allies were caught in the web (or possibly simply weren't triggered, even when I walked to the edge of the web/cloudkill area to fight Sarevok) so I was left fighting just Angelo and Sarevok. It was close, and I lost Khalid (and finished his chalice), and I made some errors, but ultimately I killed Angelo fairly quickly though he got dangerously close to causing disaster by getting to my weakened characters. Sarevok then died to rotating out characters to hold him in melee when they got too injured, some helpful buffing from my dryad summon, and a stream of missile fire. It felt good, and I'd brought a scroll of resurrection which I used to bring back Khalid as the victory movie played.
