I know the pre-order and special edition sets of BG2 had special magic items unavailable to those who bought the regular release, and I assume BG1 had similar bonus stuff for its special releases. Does anyone know if the BG packs sold here on GOG are one of the special versions, or if there is a fix out there that makes them available to everyone?

Bioware made those items available in one of the later patches. I don't know if the GoG version includes that patch but you can download it from Bioware if it doesn't.

I didn't realize patches added in the bonus merchants. However, I've always used the BG2 tweakpack from G3, which inlcudes the bonus merchants as a content tweak.
