So, I was going through a vilalge called Naskel and I met this man called MInsc and his... something called Boo. He asked me if I could help him but I already had a full party and I said no, and he attacked me. Later, I saw people on the internet saying he is probably the best companion in the game.

So my question is, do you think it's worth re-rolling a character just to get Minsc? Since I wasn't able to talk with any of my companions so far (It seems you can't talk with your companions randomly like in Dragon Age.), I'm not sure you can talk to them at all. I'm still in Naskel since I got bored with the game after that and replay Planescape: Torment again instead, so I'm not that far from the beginning of the game.
Yes, it is worth rerolling just for Minsc! He is such a great character, and his battlecrys are the best!
Minsc is rather one of the weakest characters in the game. The reason why he's so popular is that he's an 1-dimensional joke without depth (point-click-kill) and therefore is easier to handle on the emotional level than other characters.
Lol, ok I think kmonster might exaggerate a bit, but he's actually right.
Minsc is way overrated, especially the so called personality of his.
He has high strength, with is always good, but not THAT important. Other than that you might enjoy his voiceset if you think as a high point in humor an imbecile yelling inane battlecries. Myself, after a while I found those irritating.

Also the NPCs in BG1 have so little dialogue that I don't think it's worth considering in your decision who to take in. Unless you install BG1NPC mod, where modders add quite a bit of banter for each NPC, but for me all the praise for this mod is unjustified and not really worth it.
Hmmm.

Well, I'm still playing Deus Ex the second time, so I don't even know if I will return for Baldur's Gate but if I do, I don't think I'll reroll just for him, as pacing is my greatest problem with the game, and I don't want to do all the walking again.

By the way, I'd also like to ask if you can actually start conversations with your companions or they only have the banthers? If you can't, it's strange why they call Dragon Age: Origins the spiritual successor of Baldur's Gate when you can talk anywhere with your companions.
About calling Dragons age the spiritual successor of baldurs gate , they are probably refering to baldurs gate 2 wich has a lot of banters and you get to know your companions from the very beggining , i myself love minsc and is a character that i seem to not be able to leave out of my party , he might not be the best if you are looking for a powergaming group , but for me he does all i need , hits hard , its maddly crazy , can hide in shadows , and have a hamster ;) , baldurs gate 1 dont have basically none banter , expect a very rare cases where one char might say two frases to the companion that allways travels with him , like for example Jaheira to Khalid , you probably met them allready , but companions dont really shine till baldurs gate 2 in terms of realims , still baldurs gate its a great game and you should give it a try , to be honest i played dragon age and finished it once , i started baldurs gate over and over and keep coming back after time to play again , you have to think that bettewn dragon age and baldurs gate have passed many years , but if you mod baldurs gate it can get a hole lot more fun , still for a first time i would not mod it much , so you can see the big diference bettewn modded and unmodded , still just have fun with whatever game you choose , the point its to have fun after all ;)
I'm going to have to disagree with kmonster, largely because he phrased what he posted in the most condescending fashion possible. I agree that his stats could be better though, only 16 CON and DEX? Meh.

I am of the mind kmonster's negative perception of Minsc's character is his own failing and not that of Minsc. The thing about truly pure hearted characters is that are by their very nature simple. What makes him enjoyable isn't that he's "easier to handle", it is that he is genuinely good. Childlike in many ways. And no, Minsc is not dry, witty satire or heady political shtick or some other more deep manifestation of humor., but neither are fart jokes and fart jokes, are now, always have been, and always will be funny.

Minsc has 15 DEX and 15 CON in BG, his stats had even to be upgraded in the sequel because he was so weak. Strength is so easy to raise (just cast strength twice in a row for 18/00 for example) while dex and con are more difficult. He doesn't even start proficient in bows and for tanking he just doesn't have the dex or con to last long.
And a maniac who tries to kill you if you don't agree to add him to your party and get his damsel in distress immediately is not "truly pure hearted", it's not even believable that such a character is still alive.
Kicking butt for goodness...right Boo?

It's not even believable that he's a Ranger.
See, I never have had him attack me, so I've never seen that side of him. Also, he's brain damaged, you can't judge him by the traditional standards. I'm just saying, stats aside, I enjoy him. And it's not because I lack depth, or because I can't "handle" more complex characters, it's because I have a flexible mind capable of appreciating a myriad of character types. That being said, I did kit him to an Archer last time I included him in a party... lol
