Playing BG1 again. So I'm looting houses, as is my wont, and I've come across one house in the northeastern section of BG just west of the temple of Ilmater. There's a woman inside in the downstairs section and a locked chest. Upstairs are several cabinets, etc. that you can open (more than in most houses). In one you find a Cloak of Protection +1. Anyway, the chest downstairs cannot be picked or opened via spell (you get a message saying it requires a key and may be warded from simple spells).

Anyone know how to open this chest or where the key might be found? I tried picking the woman's pocket, but she has no items.

One thing of note that I just thought of. Upstairs, one of the 'containers' you can open is actually a book on a small night table (located in the bottom middle room). I wonder if this is perhaps a part of the solution, as I've never seen that type of 'container' in any other house so far (maybe if you put the proper book into it, then something will happen... I'll check that possibility when I get home).

My guess is, the container is locked as the house has a role to play in a quest given to you by the Thieves' Guild headmaster Alatos. I've never been in that house before getting the quest, and once you get the quest, there's no un-openable container.

[minor spoiler]

To enter the Thieves' Guild, you need to know a password, but someone is willing to tell you it (the guild is in the section of the city near the city gate where you entered).

I've been in the Thieve's Guild, but I don't recall a quest involving that house. I did Narlen's two quests as well as the main one for the Guild (for Alatos). None of them involved that house.

I don't think there is a way to open it.
Looking through files with Near Infinity, that chest is:
- locked (difficulty 100)
- trapped (detection diff. 100, disarm diff. 100)
- no key
- containing a great treasure of 16gp and one Flamedance Ring ;)

Just let it go, that poor woman is apparently really attached to these items :)

lol- no worries, I'll let her keep her stuff. I was just curious if there was anything at all in it, and if so whether it was something spectacular or not.

Thanks a lot for looking it up with NI. :)
