olnorton: Did you patch the game?

Robmonster: Patch it? I used the GOG installers, thought they were already pre-patched?
Yes they are, but I have seen people get that message after installing a patch to the GOG version.
or the BG1TOSCGameTextUpdate11
That is why I asked.

Hickory: There is a problem with the tutorial, because the GOG version creates an alias for 6 discs, and the original only came on 5 discs, so check your baldur.ini, and for the [Alias] section make sure there is not 6 CD entires. Let's assume that your BG2 is installed to C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\, then check the following...

This is WRONG:
[Alias]
HD0:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\
CD1:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD2:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD3:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD4:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD5:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD6:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\

This is RIGHT:
[Alias]
HD0:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\
CD1:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD2:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD3:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD4:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\
CD5:=C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\;C:\Games\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\CD5\
I have Alias's for 6CDs & Easy Tutu never asks for discs.

It only happens in the tutorial.

Doesn't happen to me in the tutorial either.

Well it does to me. This line "CD6:=C:\GOG.com\Baldurs Gate II\data\" is never used by the game, because it originally came with only 5 discs, and the tutorial chokes on it. I cannot do the tutorial with the original GOG ini settings, but I can with the correct ones.
Just wanted to say thanks to OP for putting this together and everyone who participated for making an absolutely essential thread on running this game. I had no experience with modding or installing mods and it was a little daunting but I managed to figure it out. Game runs beautifully in 1920x1080. Excited to see what unfinished business does because the last time I played BG was over 10 years ago so I forget a lot.

Thanks everyone.

Ah, i understand! No, I hadn't patched it. Just downloaded fresh copies of BG1 and BG2 from GOG and used those. I sorted the problem out anyway ( I think I posted the correction I made to the ini file?)
In case anyone is looking for a GUI mod that works well with this guide, check out Original BG1 GUI.

Make sure you install it before the widescreen mod. I've got it running at 1280x720 and it is great.

Ascension works just fine with the GOG version. As for recommendations, it depends on what you want from a mod. If, for example, you use Sarevok in your team, you are able to return the Sword of Chaos to him which then gets upgraded; You will face an entirely different battle with Amelyssan at the end -- depending on how you handle it, you will face Irenicus, Bodhi, Imoen (as the Slayer), and Sarevok before facing the Five. Optional components make for tougher battles. From what I have observed, people either love or hate Ascension. I detest Throne of Bhaal, so I won't say one way or the other.
What are the benefits of running BG1 on the BG2 engine using EasyTuTu or BGT?

EDIT: Specifically, will the graphics be improved at all?

Yes, the graphics will be improved. Also, you will not need to install the widescreen mod for (some) higher resolutions. Just use the BGConfig tool in the installation folder and enable the unsupported resolutions. The other notable improvement is that you can highlight interactive elements with the TAB key.

You should also be aware that playing in TuTu/BGT is not the same (by any stretch of the imagination) as playing the vanilla game. There are so many differences that it's difficult to describe: you have to have played vanilla to understand what I mean. These mega mods DO change things... lots of things; some subtle, some not so subtle. They also open up a world ripe for overpowered cheats/exploits.

Their are too any benefits to list, but yes your graphics will be improved.
The Vanilla game only allows VGA 640 X 480
Thank you both for the quick response. I'll skip using BGTuTu and BGT this time around.

Anyone have alternative places to get the mods available on pocketplane? (0.1kb/s...got to be kidding).
