My party is currently too weak to win the last bossbattle of Baldur's Gate 1. Three of them are level 7 and the remaining three are level 6. I need an excellent place for harvesting tons of xp so i can level them up a bit. Problem is, i have discovered every place on the map, and done all the quests i have gotten from random people in the wilderness. Despite this, i think that i have barely scratched the surface of this epic game.

So where can i find a place to get lots of xp? Haven't been able to do everything in Durlag's Tower yet though, but that is too difficult for now.

I am using the Enhanced Edition.

It depends on what you are prepared to do, on a 'cheese' level. If you don't mind cheesy tactics, then go to the sea cave on the map where you find Safana; the place where you get the Constitution tome. Sleep in that cave, as it continually spawns Flesh Golems for 2000 xp each. Cheese, but...

Edit: another good place to sleep/farm is the Nashkel Mines map. Winter Wolves spawn there for 975 xp each.

Hmm.. not bad, i could do that. Although i don't know where the sea cave is (this is my first time playing through BG).

By the way, do you know where this is?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86NLGVQ6Iaw snowy place, 10 seconds into the trailer. Also looks like a nice place to do some quests.

It's on the coast where you ran into the group of Sirens.

I don't recognize it. Must be one of the new areas added into the EE.

It's Black Alaric's cave on the Lighthouse map.

That's unique to the Enhanced Edition, which I haven't played since I first bought it, so I can't recall where it is -- it's probably either the Cloud Peaks (part of Rasaad's story) or the Black Pits.
Thanks for the help :)

I've been to Nashkel Mines and the sea cave now, it worked according to plan in the Nashkel Mines map, but in the sea cave i've gotten Carrion Crawlers 15 times in a row while sleeping, and no flesh golems. Do i need to do a quest first or is it something different about EE? Could also be that golems are very rare-spawning.

Are you resting in the caves? They always spawn inside. Or they have when i tried resting there, anyway.

It could be something different about EE? When I used that tactic to level up Imoen while dual classing her, after doing all the other content I could without a thief, I got flesh golems almost every time and those rare times I didn't I had an undisturbed sleep. By the way, I assume you've gone through and actually picked up the tome and used it? If not, you definitely should.

The fact that you missed this one suggests that you may have missed others. If so, you'll probably want to go back and find them, especially if you plan to continue into BG2: stat increases are rare, and valuable, not to mention that you'll probably get xp doing the content that you inadvertently missed. You can get a total of 8 tomes in the game: 3 for wisdom, and one for each of the other stats. You can, I think, go back to get any of them, with the exception of one of the wisdom ones, if you chose the wrong dialogue options in the relevent quest.

Oh, and you'll probably find Durlag's Tower easier than the final boss of the game, if my experiences are anything to go by: the difficulty of the battle was increased with the expansion to account for the greater amount of xp you'd earn. I'm also not sure whether you'll be able to easily return to the sidequests like Durlag's Tower after winning the final boss battle, as it ends the game.

Yes, i'm resting inside the caves.

@pi4t
I have found the tome, it is the third tome i've found so far. I'll see if i can find the other ones this weekend.

I can't progress in Durlag's Tower because of the Basilisks that are team-sweeping me. But i did some research and it seems that there is a potion against petrification. The basilisks are an excellent source of xp, so i'll see if i can get that potion anytime soon.

Hmm, must be a change with the EE then.

Re the petrification: as well as the potions of Mirrored Eyes, which have a short duration, there is also the spell Protection From Petrification which, if memory serves, you should have found as loot by now, or it should be available in a shop. Duration on the spell is much longer than the potion.
Thanks for the tip, i just went to the spell-shop and found the protection from petrification spell. Casting it on two of my fighters was enough to kill all of the basilisks. Got 12000 xp from it (not including the smaller basilisk, i had killed it previously, probably got 1400 from that one)

I just checked the area file, and indeed it is changed in the Enhanced version, as you can see here. No more Flesh Golem farming.

I had forgotten that you hadn't yet done Durlag's Tower: one of the tomes I mentioned is inside it, so don't go hunting for that one! Basilisks are indeed a pain: I always found that summons were a good substitute for the potion in desperate times. Get some low level summons, send them first, some of them get petrified, and you try to keep them around for the basilisk to target while you frantically kill it as quickly as possible. It isn't actually necessary to kill the basilisks in the tower, though. Remember what race Durlag was: where do you think most of the construction will be, up or down?

If you care to tell me which tomes you have (and obviously in the case of wisdom tomes where you got them from) I may be able to give you hints as to where to look for the others.

The tomes i have found so far are a wisdom tome which i found inside Durlag's Tower a while ago, the other tome i had was another wisdom tome, which i do not remember where i found. The last tome i have found was the one in the sea cave (seems to be called Manual Of Bodily Health in EE), it raises constitiution by one point.

Ok, I'll offer some hints as to where you can find the others. Feel free to read or not read them as you wish, though it seems like you've missed a fair amount of things if you've only found three of them, so you might like to explore a little more too. Though I'll try to be fairly unspoilerish, and still have you use your brain to work out where things are, spoilers may appear, especially for anyone reading this who's earlier in the story. You mention that you're about to have the final boss fight? I assume, then, that you met Koveras a chapter or so ago? If not, then you aren't actually on the final fight yet, and shouldn't read on until you actually reach that point due to spoilers.

Dexterity: This can be found in a container of a guild whos members would gain greatly from its powers.
Intelligence: Also to be found in the city, search the shelves of a learned, though unpleasant, gentleman who asked you to do a quest for him.
Strength and one of the Wisdoms: Well, really, you return to your home at last and are eager to leave so soon? Especially when you've just discovered new secrets about it...
The other Wisdom: Wander around in NE Baldur's Gate until you encounter Marek, then when you next go to central Baldur's Gate a quest chain will begin which will lead to the possibility of obtaining this tome, if you don't give it away. I'm being a little more spoilerish with this one as it's the one which you can permanently lose, and I also suspect that it's probably the one you've used.
Charisma: Minsc and Edwin will both lead you to the correct area for this treasure.
