Re-installed the game on my desktop and used a save from the laptop where I have gotten to the city. Installed some mods, including easyTutu, widescreen, some fixes, UB. One of the options in the tweakpack was to add map notes to the map, which are very helpful in the city. Unfortunately these are not present when I click on the map, probably because I didn't have this option enabled on the laptop when I last played.

Is it possible to somehow enable this, although I have already come to the city?

Haven't played the game for a good while now, so everything is a bit fresh, and I'm feeling quite lost in the BG city.
This question / problem has been solved by anamorphicimage
I think map notes and visibility are stored in your save file and mods don't mess with that. It's the same as going fresh in the city with all the notes intact and manually deleting them all. The mod wouldn't forcibly create them back.

Also, unless you installed the same bunch of mods as before (or you know what you're doing), it could be a good idea to start anew. Some mods are really only work correctly on a new game.
That's what I was afraid of, that it wouldn't work to put them back in. Have printed out a map of the city now, so that should help a ton.

I've installed the same mods, but possibly a few options from the BG2 Tweaks are different. Can't be bothered to start a new game after playing this far before, and considering there are no problems loading the save and I've played a little more, I hope it will work out fine.

What kind of problems can I run into?
Nah, tweak shouldn't matter. I was talking mainly about mods that change locations, npcs or add triggers in areas. For example npcs you've already met are stored in the save file as well, so you would never see the change etc. Stuff like that.

And I was going suggest as a substitute to look for a map online, but you got it covered. :)
Okay, thanks. I should be fine then as I've been just about everywhere except to Durlag's Tower, and a few spots in the city.
Sigh. There may be a problem after all. Went to the bottom part of the city, and some chap greets me. He has no name when I hover over his head, and he has nothing to say when I engage him.

I quit, and install the NPC project, which I didn't install this time as I didn't really like all that extra banter. Install the exact same things I had in the old one, following the old weidu.log from the laptop.

Fire up the game again, and go to the same location from the old save. Now he has a name and talks to me (asks for a gnome), but his name is "Somehow that doesn't make me feel better, y'know." Looks much more like a sentence than a name ;)

Something must have gotten fudged somewhere along the way. Is this serious or can I just continue now? Naturally there are still some areas I have not been to, as I'm still in chapter 5 in the city, and haven't gone to the extra areas, except Ice Island.
Yea, that's a strange name indeed. :P
I'm not sure about this, but I think StringRefs are calculated on installation so are not constant. Apparently string # with supposedly his name, has a random sentence now. It's highly probable that it will not cause any problem. Could be that you had visited this area before, while on your laptop, and that npc got stored in the save, so now you get a messed up stringref. Otherwise you should be able to continue with no problem.

By the way, is this chap next to the arch near the Iron Throne building? If it's him his name is Belgin and is part of the Tiax personal quest. If you don't have Tiax in your party he doesn't matter. I remember because I was googling for him recently, wandering who the hell is he. The only thing that's different in your description is that he didn't initiate dialog, I had to talk to him.

Personally I would keep playing.

On a side note, I'm glad that you said you didn't like BG1NPC banters. After all the praise I've heard, I thought I was the only one. :)
That's re-assuring. Starting over now is NOT tempting :|
Opened a save on the laptop and saw his name was Belgin, so it's the guy you thought it was.

The easyTutu version on the desktop is (probably) newer than on the laptop as well, so maybe that changes something too? Anyway, if it's just a messed up name and nothing else then it should be fine to progress. You're probably right I've been there before, so maybe that's why he is there although I didn't have NPC installed at that point. Sounds like a reasonable explanation with the stringref.

Wow, another soul out there that doesn't like it!? :D

Just found it annoying overall to be going out exploring and suddenly some bint wants to talk to me for seemingly forever. Felt it was an awkward breakup, and didn't feel natural. Maybe I need to keep it now though? Didn't install the romance options, but there is some extra banter I think.

Well, hopefully it will be okay to continue. Right now I'd like to keep going, and visit Durlag's Tower because I haven't been there yet. Have finished the game once, but wanted to do the whole lot now, and take my Illusionist-Thief into BG2. Perhaps not the greatest build, but I like to be able to open chests and find traps myself without relying on Imoen, and mages are always fun :P
My sentiment exactly, about the npc talks. It seems to me that they took the central motif of each npc (Jaheira is bossy, Xan is depressed etc) and made it the only aspect of their character. And damn they are wordy! I don't usually complain if a game has a lot of text to read, but it would help if it is interesting. :)
I eventually finished BG1 with it, but I don't think I will install again.

And your illu/thief could break the game later on... well as any mage would, but thieves have a semi exploit that's entertaining: Cast MIslead, (as long as the image exists you can attack and cast totally invisible, not even partially visible), cast Haste, throw in a Tenser's for good measure and start backstabbing with every hit 'tll there's chunks flying everywhere!
Cheesy, I know.... oh, well. :)

Did you try the button on the map screen that turns the notes on/off?

Not played BG2 yet, apart from a quick wander around in the starting location, but that looks like a pretty severe exploit - unless the mods I've installed have fixed that. Unless I've forgotten it by the time I get there, I can at least try it out to see if it's still present.

Haven't used thief abilities so far actually, apart from trap finding and chest opening :D Well, have tried to backstab a few times, but it won't take for some reason. Am in hiding, walk up behind somebody and attack. All that happens is that I leave shadows and now everybody are ganging up on me. Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!!! :D :D

I love PST so text-filled games are certainly not a problem, but like you say it must be good text and relevant text. Too often it just felt rushed in and 'wrong' somehow. Like I'm about to smack some ogre around, and suddenly Imoen wants to talk to me about dreams. WTF? Or Kivan goes on and on and on about this, that or the other thing (his wife and nature if I recall correctly).

The main benefit about it is to be able to send NPCs back to an Inn. Other than that I don't really like it very much. Hopefully the much-talked about banter in BG2 is implemented better.

Anyway, considering it was already installed when I started this playthrough on my laptop, maybe it's best to keep it in. Romances are at least off, so hopefully they won't nag me too much.

Oh dear....

Didn't even know about that button! But now when you mentioned it I tried to click on various stuff in the map screen, and suddenly the notes popped up. Thanks! :)

Still great to have the printed map though, because too often the journal doesn't say where I'm to meet somebody or where a mission was taken, and the printed map has all the names of such things. Was just looking for Ghorak, and found him way south on the map.

Since you are in to mods SCS offers a similar component, so you are covered.

I'm starting BG2 now so I'm too curious (and hopeful) if BG2 variants are better.
True, but it also makes battle harder, and that's the last thing I need :D
I don't refer to the game as Baldur's Reload without reason ;)

Played a fair few hours today, and it seems to work well, apart from some characters here and there with names like sentences.

Thinking about heading over to Durlag's Tower actually. Won't get up in more levels for a long while anyway, and don't think there is all that much more to do in the city before the serious business. Will probably be Baldur's Reload in overdrive, with the presumably many death traps and tough foes everywhere, but it will be fun to play something I haven't done before.

Good luck with BG2. I look forward to getting there too, but it's still a long way ahead. Hopefully banter works better there than the NPC mod. It should, considering it's official.

Just a tip, I would stay away from any "banter accelerator" options in BG2 banter mods, if you go there. I had it on at first, and a) everyone was chattering away so often I could hardly get anything done, and b) by about mid chapter 2 it seemed they had mostly run out of stuff to say as a result. (And I had it on the lengthiest setting between banters). You really do not need that in a game as huge as BG2 unless you're making a speed run, there is plenty time to hear every bit of banter.

Thanks for the tip, although I never did touch any accelerator in the past, I didn't have to actually experience that to guess the outcome, but it's good to know for sure.

And to make myself clearer, I wasn't talking about the official banter. We all know the ups and downs and is generally quite fitting. But I saw several "must have"-lists bringing up extra banter (Banter Pack, IEP Extended Banter and Flirt Pack) so often that I thought to give it a try. After the BG1NPC thing though I'm not looking forward to it that much.
