I noticed so far, that the higher the magic resistance of my party members is, the more often friendly spells cast on them, such as buffs or heals fail, and are wasted on them. While i noticed that in BG2, nothing of sorts ever troubled me (and there i had way higher resistance, having transferred the cape of balduran and stuff with the starting dungeon trick). Is this supposed to happen? Pretty much, this fact makes carrying clerics in 1 pretty much useless and meaningless, especially so since undead are not such a drag as in the sequel, both in power and numbers.

Not sure, but I think this may have been an engine change in BG2 from BG1. Are you playing BG1 in the BG2 engine?

No, i am playing both games without mods, fixes, addons. Just as they are after downloading them from here. You have to be right, though, it must be an engine change. Bah, resisting a heal, a chant or a spirit armor is such a nuisance!
The behavior of magic resistance changed between BG and BG2. BG magic resistance is applied against all spells, friendly or otherwise--have fun healing Viconia.
yep, BG2 is a wishing 3.0 where the spell resistance concept changed, on the 2d edition, the Spell resistance was general and always present. For 3.0 the creatures with spell resistance could "down it" for brief moment if they wanted

This is not a 2nd ed versus 3.whatever ed. problem, it is an engine limitation/decision of BG1.

In PnP AD&D 2nd ed. you can freely reduce your MR to allow friendly [or enemy] spells to affect you. This is covered in both the PHB and the DMG for 2nd ed AD&D.

No problemo. Sometimes people conflate BG1 engine mechanics as being exactly AD&D 2nd ed... which isn't true of course.

There has also been, over the years, not a little misinformation spread about 2nd ed by afficinados of, and/or apologists for, 3.+ ed AD&D. Not unlike the Mac/PC debate, IMHO. Different systems, which produce different results, which are differentiated primarily by personal, and thus totally subjective opinion.
