I played through BG1 a long time ago as a Fighter and took the canonical party (Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc, Dynaheir) but this time I'd like to try something different. I'm thinking of creating a Mage and going with Imoen, Jaheira, Viconia, Minsc, and Edwin. Since these characters are apparently the only ones that transfer over to BG2 would this be a viable party for a full run through of BG1 and 2 using BGT? Would I run into problems with my party killing each other?

I've heard mention of a mod called "happy party" that keeps party members from killing each other but I haven't found it anywhere. Is this included in BGT?

With BG2tweaks you have a npc's don't fight option.

Consider going for Sorcerer over mage.
You couldn't run this party in vanilla BG 1, since Minsc and Edwin conflict and will end up fighting each other IIRC.
Also, I think Minsc leaves the group if Dynaheir dies, so you can't have one without the other long term in BG 1.

I think the BG2TWeaks would solve the first problem and possibly the second. The BG 1 NPC project can fix the second, anyway, since there is an option to break up "couples" of NPCs.
I second olnorton's advice, take a sorcerer instead of a mage. As mage you'll feel totally inferior to Edwin who gets 3 extra spells per level and day.
If you avoid Edwin then head back to pick him up after you have picked up Minsc and rescued Dynaheir you can have all three of them in your party without losing any (they will still argue). I have successfully played such a party to the end without any party mods.

IIRC Edwin even has dialogue where he talks himself into joining while Dynaheir is in the party to "keep an eye on her" so that would not be an exploit but a consequence of the order in which they were acquired.

In any case, without mods you will still have to do the reputation juggling thing to keep Edwin and Viconia from leaving.

BG1 Tweaks has the same component at BG2 Tweaks (NPC's Don't Fight) so you can run them in vanilla. I don't know if they updated the readme for BG2 Tweaks to show it's a separate component, but I made sure it was in BG1 Tweaks. The only member not affected by this component is Ajantis, because when he attacks an evil party member, neither leave the party and you can get them back under control.

As for Minsc, he will remain in party after Dynaheir dies so long as you keep a high enough reputation and don't kick him out.

@ Crowseye - The "Happy Patch" component can also negate the effect of reputation on all party members, so the good will stay with low rep while the bad stay with high.
I'm having trouble replying to this thread. I click Post My Message, the box disappears, and nothing happens. Weird. It seems to work occasionally though.

The staff added a very rough spam filter as a stopgap until some people get back from holiday to do a proper one; if your rep. is still low you can't post URLs (which is why I can't include links to the threads about this), and URL-less posts may also fail for reasons which remain opaque.
Ah, okay. Anyway, I installed the happy patch and npcs don't fight and I'm going to roll a sorcerer. I'd say more but every time I try to post a larger post it's blocked.
Just keep in mind, that no matter what type of character you roll, you will be Very weak when you leave the safety of Candlekeep. Anything can kill you & using ranged weapons while running away is always good.
