I've been sitting around waiting for the BG series to go on sale. These were tremendous games from my college days and I would love to play them again (with the tutu mod of course) but I have been on a pretty tight budget for a while...

I could swing the $10 if they went on sale, but $20 pushes my limits. Sad, I know.

Anyway, noting the popularity of the BG series, I doubt they have been on sale before, but I thought I would ask and see if there is any hope to be had. So, can anyone remember if they have been on sale before? Thanks guys. I love this community...

Haven't seen it on sale since i've been lurking around here since Jan.

Same goes for the Icewind Dale games...
/sigh

Well, most unfortunate news, but thanks for the reply Shiek2005. I guess I will just have to suck it up and get BG1 in the next couple of weeks and then grab BG2 after another month or two.

Thanks for the reply!
BG1 (w/TotSC) got here in Sept 2010, & BG2 (w/ToB) got here in Nov 2010, and they both were part of that insane December 2010 sale, where like 90% of GoG games were being sold for less than their normal price. The two BG offerings were sold @ $6.99 each in that time.

They haven't been on sale since, but ya never know.....

Anyways, I've been in BG1 since late January of this year, and I haven't even touched any part of TotSC yet. So perhaps you can truly purchase one game, and then when you've the coin, buy the other.

Normally when I've played BG1 in the past, it only took me 3-4 months to play from Chapter 1 to Chapter 7, while doing TotSC things in between towards the end. But its taking me so long now b/c I'm more roleplaying than I am action gaming (ie- not using anything that can be considered cheese, and I'm actually not tryna kill everything in sight! LOL!). Doing it like this has resulted in me having the most fun I've ever had in playing the BG series. For real.

That was going to be my one and only suggestion, but the OP mentioned wanting to play BG1 using EastTutu (basically, play BG1 using the BG2 engine) and for that he needs both games.

But yeah, i'm planning to use a similar method for the Icewind Dale games as well, unless they go on sale soon.
Oh I missed that. Well if it's any consolation, I'm not using BG1Tutu, juss normal BG1 w/the Unfinished Business mod, and I'm having loads of fun.

Or the OP can buy BG2 first, then eventually get into BG1. That's how I got introduced to the series, and I'm no worse for the wear. :oD
Thanks for the back and forth guys. I enjoy the dialogue.

Shiek is right that I would prefer to use the EasyTutu mod for BG1.

That said, since I think I would only have to put off a BG2 purchase for a month or two after the BG1 purchase, I suppose I could live with the original until then.

And you're right blade, I could always buy BG2 first...but its hard for me to play sequels prior to the original, even if I have played these games before.

Eh, either way thanks for the info and help fellas.

GAH! I just saw the M&M sale...oh my oh my. *sigh* =/
They are both good. Just try and win a contest
Playing BG2 before playing BG1 is especially difficult, for several reasons. Firstly, the interface is MILES behind the excellent interface for 2. The character models don't look too great either, and everyone walks painfully slowly, even with boots of speed.

With Tutu or BGT these interface issues are (mostly) resolved, but you still have things like Random Joe #17 walking up to you, force-initiating dialog, screaming at you for interrupting HIM, and then wandering off the map never to be seen again. WITH FIFTY VARIATIONS. That's probably the most irritating thing about the entire game for me.

BG1 has an excellent story, but BG2 is a much, much better game.

I notice impulse has many of the old bioware games (including baldur's) for half price this weekend. I'm looking into whether the software they want you to use is a problem ( impulse loader). web page claims no drm.

Only ever bought one game from Impulse (GalCiv 2), but as far as I remember they let you play it outside of the Impulse software (so not like Steam in this regard) but they require the software to download the game, don't they? Which means you don't get an installer for the game itself you can backup like from GOG.

This may have changed since then, I haven't used them since forever.

Someone said in the Gaming Deals Thread that you can't have easy backups with them, like you do with GoG games.

So they claim it's DRM-Free, but it's a false claim; at least in comparison w/the way how GoG says it.

I got the BG to see what it was like. After installation, you can run it without the client (impulse) being present. So there's no DRM (on the old Bioware games - there's DRM on some other games).

The problem is the broken archiving function in the client. You can make an nice, neat archive. But the restore archive feature is broken and has been broken since at least 2009. Many complaints, so far as I can tell, nothing has been done although there are some very creative and complex attempts by users to work around it.

I'm not sure that's a deal breaker so far as the bioware games go. I uninstalled BG and was able to make it work by unpacking the archive (using the 7z program) into another directory (using the original directory names). I didn't run an install program. The game SEEMED to work when I just clicked on the baldur.exe file but I haven't played it before and I might not notice if something wasn't working right.

Anyway, the more I look at other game DL services, the more I appreciate GOG.

----------- update as of 8/15 --------------

Here's the fix - instead of downloading and installing, you have to choose download and archive. Then, after it's finished, you can choose the restore archive command and the game works fine. If you install and then tell impulse to create an archive, it won't be able to restore that archive.

But, by downloading and archiving, I was able to get all 5 games and make them work.

Full install + change paths in baldur.ini = no need for disc swapping beyond installation. Only disc 2 is needed to bypass cd-check.
