Hi, my game keeps crashing when I try to enter small houses on Ulgoth's Beard (the Inn and the houses related to the Cultists quests are fine). But if I recall correctly there are a few quests in the small houses, so I would like to be able to enter in those houses without my game crashing on me.

So far only the small houses are causing my game to crash (it stays in a black screen, not responding and I have to terminate the process). The game is completely unmodded (vanilla!)

My computer specs are:

Intel i7 930 2.8GHz
VGA AMD HD5870
6GB RAM DDR3

The video drivers are up to date, also tried re-installing the game with no success.

Thanks in advance!
I'm afraid I have no idea, but have you bought the game from GOG, or are you playing it off a CD? If it's the former, then you might want to submit a support ticket if you haven't already (click on the support button at the top of the page, and go from there). If it's from a CD, make sure you've got the latest patch: you can find a number of links around the forum, especially on the mods lists. If you have the GOG version, don't bother with this, as the games come with the patches preinstalled.

It's the GOG version, so it's patched.

So, you're saying if I send a support ticket they can help me without asking me to re-install the game and update my drivers? I might give it a try then, thanks.

I can't say for sure, but it's worth a try! Tell them what you've already done, so they don't tell you to do it again.

I sent them a ticket...they are taking their time to respond.

But it's very odd that only a few houses are causing the game to crash. I have some quests to complete in there...
So I tried running the game in Windowed mode and here's the error I got:

"An Assertion failed in D:\Dev\Baldur\CVisibility.cpp at line number 1484"

As I said, only in the smaller houses, I have to finish a quest related to Therella and Dalton but the game keeps crashing whenever I try to enter her house.

The game crashes in other smaller houses around the game, but apparently most Inns and major buildings seem to be working.

I know you said your game is unmodded, but I feel it is almost certain that you have the widescreen mod installed, and (because of that) your save game has become corrupt -- that is what that error is telling you. Your save game is toast.

I never installed any mod, I only play vanilla.

How come my save game is toast? I've done nothing wrong. Does GOG seriously ensure this game runs on Windows 7 or is that just false advertisement?

It has nothing to do with GOG -- why do people have a tendency to rush to blame GOG for bugs in games? If your game is completely virgin, then your save has become corrupt for some other reason than the widescreen mod. But that error IS telling you that your save game is corrupt. Baldur's Gate stores game assets in it's saves, and it is those corrupt assets that cause crashes like this (CTD when entering or transitioning an area).

As Hickory noted, it's nothing to do with GOG. I've played through the game twice vanilla and at least 8 times with mods since I bought it and had no issues such as you're experiencing. I'm on Win7 64 bit.

Is there any workaround for that? I've been playing with this save for over an year now, I reall would like to keep playing on it.

So am I supposed to just lose all my progress? That's not what I envisioned when I spent $10 on this game.

Do you have no other saves? (Check your autosave as well, as there may be one that isn't too far back from where you are now).

All my saves past Durlag's Tower quest have this issue.

The saves when I first got to Ulgoth's Beard and before it seem to be working fine.

[SPOILERS]

I tried loading some saves inside Dularg's Tower and leaving the tower before killing the Demonknight and the issue remains, only the saves before going to the tower are working properly, so I'm not to keen on doing the whole Durlag quest again...

Is there any save expert out there who could help me ?

So when it comes to save corruption I figure there isn't much that can be done.

Is there at least a good save editor so I could simply skip forward the bits where I can't progress normally via dialogues in the game?

I'm currently back after killing Aec'Letec and I would like to progress to Werewolf Island, is there any save editor software that would allow me to do that at least?
You might want to consider turning the difficulty right down, which will let you charge through easily. You can also use cheats to make things easier. Just turn it back to your normal level before you level up if you play on core rules or above, or you'll be getting too many hp.

I'm afraid that afaik there isn't a save editor which can alter what quests you have and haven't done, but you can quite easily use Shadowkeeper to give yourself the items, xp and gold of your other party, and just avoid talking to the quest givers for the quests you didn't do. In effect you'll then have done them.

You'll still need to go through Durlag's to trigger, say, finding Dalton, but as I said above you can use cheats to speed things up. I believe they're enabled by default on the GOG version, but if not then just edit the ini to add cheats=1. Then you can use console commands to speed things up, which you can find in several places online, like here. You may find the move location code particularly useful, as you can go straight to the final level. The code for the area is AR0514, though I'm not sure where exactly in the area it will spawn you. Make sure you pick up the appropriate quests you haven't cashed in before starting!

Then the only thing you'll then be missing is journal entries, which I'm afraid I can't help you with. They aren't that essential, though, as they're only the ones for the done quests, and they'll be wiped if you plan to proceed to BG2 anyway.

So, in summary, you should:
Turn the difficulty down to minimum
Load (and don't overwrite!) the latest save you have without the issues
Pick up the quests that are unfinished in your corrupt save
Use the cheat console to skip to the final area of Durlag's Tower
Complete that area, which shouldn't take too long with the lower difficulty and knowledge of how to solve all the puzzles
Save your game in a new save slot
Install Shadowkeeper
Open your new save in Shadowkeeper, and your corrupt save in the game
Copy the inventory differences, gold and experience into your new save (which may be quicker if you sell items you plan to sell first)
Save in Shadowkeeper, and load in the game, and you should be able to progress as usual

Oh, and don't forget to turn the difficulty back up to your normal level when you're done! If you find that you're having trouble, say with the Durlag's Tower boss, you can edit in the items your corrupt save has at that point to make things easier.

I know it looks complicated, but it shouldn't take all too long: no more than an afternoon, in comparison to the time you'd take going all the way through TotSC again.
