Hiyas,

I just came back from Durlag's Tower, am in Baldur's Gate now and finished a couple of quests there. According to that one guide I was looking things up every once in a while, I would return to Candlekeep next. The guide said that it might be better to finish the side quests in Baldur's Gate first before heading back to Candlekeep but didn't elaborate on it.

So ... since I totally lost track of the main quest lately I felt like continuing it now and go to Candlekeep, but am just wondering if and how and when I could return to Baldur's Gate then.

Probably best to wrap up the side quests first, or at least those you are interested in, because after you go to Candlekeep things will change a little bit on your return. Don't want to say too much, but you'll see :)

You will only return to Candlekeep as part of the main storyline; you cannot 'just go back', so keep following the main quest, and don't worry too much about other minor side quests, which you will be able to do upon your return. However, once you do return from Candlekeep, there is only one thing left to do in the main storyline, so you may want to take that into consideration and wrap up any side quests before you get confirmation from Scar.

My rule of thumb is: side quests first. Most games do not allow you to 'explore' once the main quest is completed, which means you lose out on 'loot' and experience you may need to complete the main quest.

If you are unsure of where you are regarding the main quest, check your journal. If you are unsure if you've completed all side quests, check your world map...Did you go to Ulgoth's Beard?

Yes, I've been in Ulgoth's Beard, then went to Durlag and came back to Ulgoth. But that demon in Ulgoth was too hard for me yet, so I went to Baldur's Gate, first to buy potions and stuff to face the Demon but then decide to do quests there instead and do the demon later.

Now I'm at the point where Duke Eltan wants me to investigate the Iron Throne, but I've read in some guide that he will teleport you to Candlekeep then and that you'd rather finish the side quests first.

So .. yeah, I guess I will do that then.

You can always do the Iron Throne, and just delay reporting back to Ethan.

If this is the first time you have spoken to Eltan, when Scar introduces you, then no, that is not when you get teleported to Candlekeep. Eltan first asks you to investigate the Iron Throne, which you must do. It is when you return to him -- which you can do at any time, or delay it -- that he gives you a book and teleports you into chapter 6.
Okay, thanks again.
I'll do some side quests first then, right now thieve's guild.

Well, you could polymorph teleport back into Candlekeep before you are supposed to go back there, but be aware that strange things could happen if you do so. I would not recommend doing this on a first playthrough (except maybe on a separate save to play around a bit). It is actually possible to skip most of the game with the help of glitches like this one and the Dimension Door glitch.

Edit: I just checked a speedrun video, and the player actually re-entered Candlekeep with the dimension door glitch,

(Maybe spoilers in this video showing the paticular speedrun segment) (not my video)

Do you *really* think this is an option that the OP wants?
Skipping large parts of possibly the best game ever made, in the virgin playthrough -- yeah, let's do that!

Not everything in this game is about exploits, glitches and whatnot. Some of us, rather many I suspect, actually like the game (more or less) as it was intended by the developers.

What level / how much XP do you have, Tomatensaft? Sounds like you have many side quests to complete yet, but if you finished Durlag's Tower you must be at a decent level. That place is not easy.

I'd recommend to play without reading guides, especially on a first playthrough. Big risk of spoilers too.

Imoen is level 9, my main character (Cavalier) is level 8 soon and the rest is 8 as well.
Unfortunately, I didn't dual-class Imoen soon enough and then just left her to be a thief so I don't lose her thief abilities for the rest of the game.

And yeah, Durlag's Tower ... was okay. Hard but not really frustratig. Unlike the demon in Ulgoth's Beard then. Need to organize more magic for him first. Like, I read that dispell magic is necessary for him and cloudkill might even kill him immediately - so I ran around to get those spells only to find out that I already had them in my spell book with Dynhaeir but have just never used them before.

But oh well, magic is usually the most complicated part in a first play through.
