Or has it been fixed?
I experienced it a few days ago. So it's still there.
I know of 2 mods that have included a fix to prevent random crashes in Beregost into their package: Sword Coast Stratagems (couldn't find exactly when it was implemented, but the newest v.16 has it) and Gavin NPC (v.5 and later) include the bugfix (both to be found on Gibberlings3).

Tutu itself isn't updated since 28 may 2009, when the cause of the random crashes wasn't yet discovered. So install one of these mods.

There's an easy method for creating your own Weidu'd setup.exe that fixes the bug. I'll post a link if I can find out where I myself found the instructions.

Note: the fix works only if you start a new game, or didn't visit Beregost yet.

There is also a crash fixer that may repair corrupted saves :

The Dutch have a saying: "It's better to prevent than to cure". So here is how to make your own Weidu'd setup-beregostfix.exe, preventing the Beregost crashes in a Tutu install. Kudoos to StrixO on the now closed old Bioware Forums (http://forums.bioware.com/forums/myviewtopic.html?topic=723513&forum=19&sp=30) who wrote the following:

1. Grab a weidu executable
2. rename it "SETUP-BeregostFix.exe"
3. create a TXT file
4. insert the code from this link, but change:
COPY_EXISTING ~AR6700.ARE~ ~override~
to:
COPY_EXISTING ~FW3300.ARE~ ~override~
5. save the text file as "BeregostFix.tp2"
6. Drop them both in your Tutu directory and execute.

The code was written by Ascension64 for BGT, but works for Tutu with the above changes suggested by StrixO

Good luck!

lol, I love that saying. Thanks a lot!
Some old news (just cleaning up old favourited topics, but I'll leave the answer here for everyone who stumbles upon this answer by searching the net):

Since 27 March 2012, The Beregost savegame bug has been eliminated.

And there was much rejoicing.

I just started playing Baldur's Gate recently. I followed the conservative modders guide pinned in the BG forum and I'm encountering random crashes in Bergost.

Will the fix you described work with a non TuTu or BGT installation?

Not as it is. It will work, but you need to change the area file to the one in BG1 (AR3300), like so:

4. insert the code from this link, but change:
COPY_EXISTING ~AR6700.ARE~ ~override~
to:
COPY_EXISTING ~AR3300.ARE~ ~override~

Thanks Hickory. I'm surprised that wasn't included in the Baldurdash bugfixes and text update.

Can I rename a weidu executable from another mod or do I need to grab one from a specific site?

You can rename one from another mod, but you should have Weidu installed anyway. If you have, just copy and rename the weidu.exe file.

Yes, you can rename a weidu executable from another mod. Alternatively, get the latest WeiDu from http://weidu.org/main.html

In answer to your other question: the link I posted to Ascension64's code was written for BGT, so you can use that code without the area-code change mentioned if applying it to a BGT install.

For completeness sake, this is what the area code in the fix should look like, depending on the kind of install:

AR3300.ARE for BG1, FW3300.ARE for BG1Tutu, AR6700.ARE for BGT

BGEE has the fix already included.

Yesterday I have installed BGT.

I never did any modding before and I never had this bug in the original BG1.
I simply downloaded BGT version 1.18 and the BGT tweak pack (11), extracted it to The BG2 folder
and clicked setup.exe

I have BG1 and 2 from gog and no other mods.

Do I need to do something or will it run like this without problems?
And what is a WeiDU?

I think it is just the tutu mod, not the BGT-weidu mod that has the problems. At least, I have had no problems in Beregost in BG1 with the weidu mod.

Have no idea what Weidu is, imagine it's the name of the person or group that created the mod, but unsure what significance it has to them,
