I am trying to play through Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 for the first time, and i have just followed the "Baldur's Gate 2 essential mods" sticky to the letter, installing the fixpack, Weidu, and the widescreen mod. However, after meeting the mage on the trail directly after your foster father dies, i have discovered that every time i try to get him to cast a spell, (minor drain in this case) the game freezes and the sound starts looping, forcing me to ctrl-alt-delete.

Thanks in advance.

there is a missing file... but you need to give us better info to find which 1.

1. Post the WeiDU.log... a text file in the same folder as your game.

2. If you have vista or 7 then you have to place the game outside the programes folder... i doubt this is the issue in your case becase the mods would have been upset, far more likey is you reinstalled a mod without fully removing the other mods above it.
Thanks, here is the Weidu log

It is installed outside of the program files folder.
I don't remember installing this DDraw fix, maybe that is the problem unless that is part of one of the other mods.

Ramanos: I don't remember installing this DDraw fix, maybe that is the problem unless that is part of one of the other mods.
ddrawfix is now installed by default in all GOG's IE games & it may well be the problem.
I haven't used BGT since GOG started using this, but with TuTu I uninstall it before instaling the fixpack or TuTu.
I've found ddrawfix actually stops a slow down I used to get when fighting dragons, so I reinstall it just before the widescreen mod.

If I were you I would uninstall all your mods except ddrawfix & start a standard bg2 game & try some spellcasting.
If the problem is still there, uninstall ddrawfix & get the problem sorted in the standard game before modding it.

If the standard game runs fine with ddrawfix installed, I would uninstall it, install the fixpack & BGT & then reinstall it.

I would think that SETUP-BGTMUSIC.TP2 is the issue...
1. widescreen should ALWAYS be last on the install list but just the op makes it look like a sound file is what's missing to me... still, You need fixpack to get bgt working but I'm with olnorton for the rest... a good plan.
I'll follow olnorton's instructions and post what i find later tonight or tomorrow, it is strange that you say widescreen should be last, because the sticky guide says otherwise.

Also, I just realized my original post is a little unclear, the freeze happens when the spell hits, not when it is cast. So i do not believe that the spellcasting sound is missing.

The sticky is wrong.
The widesreen mod should be last, unless you are using a GUI mod that needs the widescreen mod installed before it.
Having uninstalled everything but ddraw fix, spellcasting works fine in both games. I'll reinstall the mods in the correct order and let you know what happens. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Ok, i have reinstalled the mods, and it still freezes when the spell hits. The sound did not loop this time though. I was thinking it could be the optional "Improved spell animations" in the fixpack, but I ran the game after installing it and before installing anything else and the spellcasting worked fine. Any suggestions?

Try running BGConfig.exe & enabling 3D Acceleration.

I would have also installed fixpack & BGT before ddrawfix.
LMD causing a crash is usually a pretty good sign you've somehow managed to double-install BG2 Fixpack.
3D acceleration did not help. I will try installing ddraw after fixpack and BGT.

Would a double install not show up in the weidu log?

EDIT: Changing the order of the mods did not help. If you guys are out of ideas i will try a clean install in case there is some remnant of a past fixpack install.

A clean install of BG1&2 plus mods in the right order fixed the problem, so i am thinking pcamagna was probably right. Thanks for all of your help.

Ramanos: so i am thinking pcamagna was probably right.
I think if pcamagna doesn't know his IE games, we are all in trouble.

weidu.log is how WeiDU determines if a mod is installed and in what order. In theory it means you should never be able to double-install anything--if WeiDU sees Fixpack in the log, it should offer the reinstall option instead of install. I'm not sure how it ended up getting double-installed, but I'm glad it's working for you now.
