When I get to the point of naming my newly made character the cursor is there but nothing I type comes up in the name box. I've tried doing the computer equivalent of kicking it (minimising, restarting, shouting at it) but nothing works. Any ideas?

Are you running any hotkey/remapping drivers for your keyboard ?

If not, you could try adding the executable, BGMAIN,EXE, to the Data Execution Prevention exclusion list.

Before the above.... well, did you try clicking in the name field first? I apologize if this sounds condescending, but there's a reason why the first rule of computer troubleshooting is 'check if it's plugged in'. Again, I'm sorry if you've already tried that.
Adding it to the DEP list seemed to fix it. However, what effect will this have on other programs? So far I haven't noticed anything, but am I likely going to need to turn it off again in the future?

@shadowsetzer Definitely plugged in ;)

Programmes not on the DEP exclusion list will be unaffected.
Good to know. Thanks for the help!

No problem - enjoy the game :)
Hello there. Picking up an old thread.

I've downloaded BG1 for mac OSX and also can't type anything in the field to name my character (and thus begin the game). The previous answer seems to be for Windows users.

What would the solution be for a mac OSX user?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
