There is nothing in that log that suggests something interfering with the quest. The only thing I can think of is that you have left it too late. The UB readme states:

""Finding the son of Duke Entar Silvershield is not a futile wander unless the player waits too long...""

Perhaps you have waited too long.

I think he said that he tried to restart the game as well.
Indeed, I went straight from Candlekeep. Perhaps I was there too early? Hence the lack of even the dead bodies?

Vitek, could I trouble you again? Did you install the BG1 NPC Project? Someone on Spellhold says its not in the vanilla but added by NPC project.

Does the new BGT still need fixpack... I was under the idea that those files are built in now? In any event Tutu is easy to use and works with UB if you want to try that instead.

Hm, that person seems to be right.
I indeed have NPC Project installed and I just checked its readme and meeting bandits there and gaining fibula is part of it and is not present otherwise.
UB apparently does something with that quest as well, but likely not this. What it does I don't know.
When you take the dwarf to the caravan he says something akin to “well that’s it then... I’m satisfied” that dialog (and journal entry) is what UB adds.

Ah! Mystery solved then!
It was quite sometime ago that I last played it (6? 7 years back?), and memories are hazy. I think I got it mixed up with vanilla and I can't remember what mods I was playing with. I'm only playing again because of BGT and getting ToB from GOG.

Well, thanks Vitek, Hickory and ussnorway and sincere apologies for getting mixed up.
