Hey, I downloaded BG and BG2 over the holiday break and I've just had time to start playing them. I'm having a problem where there are black boxes everywhere and the game play is really slow, especially when there are more than 2 or 3 units on the screen at once. At first I thought it might just be because I was playing Tutu with BG, but it happens on the unmodified games too. I've tried messing with the specs of the game, turning down the resolution and everything, but nothing seems to help. Here are my system specs

Windows 7
Processor: Intel(R) Core (TM) i5CPU M520 @ 2.40 GHz 2.40GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 4.00GB (2.99 GB usable)
System type: 32-bit Operating System

Anyone have any suggestions?

Try downloading the DXSDK from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=6812
It's a large download, but it will give you all the old DX libraries (as apposed to the latest "backwards compatible" ones)

It will also give you a way to disable Hardware Acceleration for Direct Draw.

Go to:
Start
All Programs
Microsoft DirectX SDK (June2010)
DirectX Utilities (Not the 64bit version)
DirectX Control Panel

On the DirectDraw Tab, untick Use Hardware Acceleration.
That was great! Solved the problem. Thanks!
