I installed BG1 and BG2 on Windows 8, and followed the directions from GoJay on installing all the mods. When I booted up BG2, none of the menu buttons had any text on them, and half the explanation text in the other windows was missing. Mousing over the text that's there leaves a trail of texture-looking stuff that blanks out the existing letters. Uninstalled everything, re-installed without any mods, and hit the same issue. I ran everything as administrator, installed to C:\Games, etc. Please help?

Try running setup-ddrawfix.exe & uninstalling it.
Then try enabling use 3D Acceleration in the graphics options of bgconfig.

Problem fixed. FYI, there is no "" in my Baldur's Gate 2 folder (or BG1 folder), for that matter. GOG support suggested the same thing.

I instead ran the file from my BG2 folder, went to the 2D & 3D Options item under Graphics, and unchecked "Use 3D Acceleration." Thanks for the response.

I have this exact same problem! can someone please help?

I have the exact same problem described above. Not using the g3 widescreen mod and changing the resolution to 1280x960 using BGConfig.exe solved this problem, but it caused the game to crash whenever any of my characters dual wield or use a 2-handed melee weapon.

I would like to try the solution suggested here but I can't find the "setup-ddrawfix.exe" file though. Where is it located?
Thanks.

It's in your Baldur's Gate 2 folder.

It's not there for me.

You must not have the latest GOG version, which includes and installs it by default. You can download it from it's home page here.

It's probably there & just hidden. (if you have installer package 2.0.0.12)
In Start/ Search programs & files put setup-ddrawfix.exe

When it says no items match your search.
click on "Search again in:" Computer (to search all indexed, non-indexed, hidden & system files)

You're right, I'm using the 4-in-1 DVD version that I bought last time (though I'm playing with a friend who has the GOG version).

I downloaded ddrawfix from that webpage and ran it. Please see the screenshot for what I got.

I tried both options, but there was no change at all (the problem still persists).
Is there a solution for non-GOG versions of the games?

Did you install the game in C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\..............?
Did you disable UAC & your antivirus program when you installed patch 26498?

Take the game out of your programs folder pooiyx.

You need to uninstall BG from the Windows' protected 'Program Files (x86)' folder. Windows will shadow copy anything written to that folder, and cause problems, especially with games -- never install games to Program Files. Re-install BG to somewhere like C:\GOG Games\Baldurs Gate\ .

Yes, I installed all the patches correctly as administrator.
I copied the BG2 folder out of my Program Files folder too.
But there's no change still, the problem is still there.

Does copying the folder to another location work? Or will only a fresh install work?
I manually updated the baldur.ini file to reflect the new CD1 to 5 locations too.

Never simply copy installed programs from one location to another. It will completely confuse Windows, and any utilities that depend on querying the registry for the install path. You must uninstall and re-install.
