I have been experiencing a recurring problem where Baldur's Gate will lock up my entire computer. I am not talking about a crash to desktop or a bluescreen. My computer just locks up entirely and requires me to power it down before it will work again.

The issue is not tied to any specific event or trigger. It will sometimes happen 3 or 4 times in an hour. Other times I can play for 3 hours without any issues. The issue seems to be tied to sound. If I mute all of the sounds in the game the crashes stop (please don't suggest just turning off all of the sound. That is not an acceptable solution).

I have a PCI sound card (Creative X-Fi Gamer). I also have on-board audio. I have tried each (obviously I have not used both at the same time) and the error occurs either way. I have also uninstalled and updated the drivers for each card.

I am running several mods (basically the recommendations from this thread ). I installed them in the recommended order.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the game.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Have you tried disabling EAX / environmental audio in the game ?
The EAX/environmental audio option is not checked. I am unable to change it. Since it is unchecked I assume it is already disabled.

What is your operating system?
I'm a bit surprised you can't change the EAX setting, especially with your Creative card. It might be worth checking the Environmental Audio setting in the Baldur.ini config (about 14th line from the end) to see if it is set to 0 to match the in-game option. For the record, mine has been running fine with EAX on (Realtek on-board sound chip - Windows XP), though I'm not sure if the Realtek supports EAX, so it might be ignoring the setting.

Oherwise, there's no harm in adjusting the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level in the Sound tab of DirextX Diagnostic Tool (Start/Run/dxdiag), although I've not heard of any problems in that area with Baldurs Gate - mine is working fine at full acceleration, but maybe it is sensitive.
