At first I experienced delayed response when loading, accessing various screens etc. as well as movement lag and mouse flickering in the game so I followed the advice in the manual, accessed the configuration menu and ticked the following boxes 'Use 3D Acceleration', '3D animations' and '32 Bit Textures'. Now everything runs smoothly but the size of the game window (800x600) has been reduced to that of windowed mode and is surrounded by black borders.

How do I solve this? I prefer a solution that only affects running this particular game.

I'm running the vanilla version as administrator on Windows 8.1 with a fully updated driver for the NVIDIA graphics card.

You fail to give any system specs. If, for example, you have an nVidia graphics card, you simply need to set desktop size and position scaling to aspect ratio in your nVidia control panel. Note that scaling on monitor will stretch the image, but scaling on GPU will leave letterbox borders left and right *if* you have a widescreen monitor. There will be a similar adjustment in the control panel for Radeon cards. If you have integrated Intel chip, I think there's a 'scale full screen' option, but I can't check that.
Yeah I'm sorry about that. I updated my post while you were commenting.

For some reason the only available option on the left side menu of the NVIDIA control panel is '3D settings'. I have no idea why all the other settings aren't displayed unless it has something to do with the 'NVIDIA GeForce Experience' that was installed last time I updated the driver.

Won't the scaling apply to everything I run on the PC? I prefer playing the game in its original aspect ratio so I don't mind the letterbox borders at all.

Ugh! This is one of those Windows 8 things, isn't it? I can't help you with Windows 8, but in Windows 7 the nVidia control panel looks like the attached image.

The scaling won't make your desktop different, but it will affect thing run in full screen (games).

That's okay, I just found this explanation:

Please see the attached image for my PC's PhysX-configuration.

Right so now I've opened the Intel HD graphics control panel instead. It's currently set to 'keep screen scaling' and for some reason it's not possible for me to change that.

Have you considered changing your configuration to let the Geforce run the screen and have the Intel manage PhysX? Currently you have a dedicated card relegated to just managing PhysX, and an integrated chip managing screen. You will be able to use the nVidia options then.

Are there any downsides to changing it?

Ahem, I could also just change the preferred processor for the exe file in 'Manage 3D Settings' in the NVIDIA control panel from the automatically chosen integrated to the NVIDIA. I can't believe I didn't think of that.

Assuming your dedicated card is more powerful, only upsides. The screen needs far more processing power than the PhysX engine, generally.

The old adage applies: the simplest solutions are not always the most obvious. :)

Cool, thanks. :)

It sure does. I tried it but I still need to find a way to access the display scaling for NVIDIA. Perhaps your solution is the best after all.

Give it a shot. You have nothing to lose, and potentially much to gain, performance-wise.
Okay, I guess I can always revert to default.

I'll probably wait until tomorrow though as I want to read up on a few things first. Thanks a lot for your help. :)
