So with the new Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate releasing tomorrow, I have to ask if A) GoG will be selling this version of the game and B) will those of us who have already bought the game have to pay again for the enhanced edition?

Normally this would be a stupid question as normally the answer would be "yes, you have to pay again", but when The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition launched my original copy of Witcher 2 got the Enhanced Edition upgrade for free. I don't know if that's something GoG did as an act of good business decisions or if the creators of Witcher 2 wanted it done like that, but either way it happened.

That said, I was wondering if GoG was going to upgrade Baldurs gate to the enhanced edition for those of us that already owned the game. Considering the goodies and bonuses the company does for us already, the ideal doesn't seem far fetched.

What are your guy's thoughts on the matter?
BGEE is exclusive to Beamdog, so...

Yes, you'll have to pay $20 for it. The Witcher thing is an exception because GOG and CDPR have the same parent company. That sort of thing isn't offered for anything else.

That said, BGEE doesn't really offer anything that isn't already done by the mod community and/or GemRB, so IMO it's a waste of money.
True enough. Still, it would be awesome.
I'll probably get it from beamdog but that's only because I didn't get it before and I don't like fumbleling with mods. Mind you I doubt it will sell well as a beamdog esclusive so there is a chance that GOG will be strategicly given rights to it as, honestly who uses beamdog. Hote that unlike gog there is a client and The EE is twice as expensive.

My guess is that Beamdog will sell it exclusively for a short while to reap maximum profits on initial release, and then license it out to other venues like Steam, GG, GOG, etc. That will then increase their market visibility but reduce their profits IMIO, so I'm guessing EE will be just Beamdog for a while.

bevinator: and/or GemRB,
Have you played it? I thought it was still being polished.
yheah but I don't trust beamdog as I've literaly never herd of it befor BGEE and I know few others have. The most hard core BG fans will dive in but I'll wait until steam or GOG has it.

It works fairly well. It's still under development and it's not done yet, but apart from a few glitches it does the job. If you don't mind being a guinea pig you should try it out. The more people use it and report bugs they find, the faster it will improve. I'd personally much rather use GemRB on a tablet than BGEE.

Support for PST and IWD2 is still fairly limited due to some of the wonky code implementations in those games, but the BG games and IWD1 work great.
Im waiting for a GOG or steam release not touching another service, if it never arrives well i have the original.
I'm waiting for GOG or Steam, and I hope when it hits GOG they give some sort of a discount for people who have the original game. But in all honesty after watching videos of it I'm not impressed with it. It looks just like my own enhanced version of the game and the new intro cinematic IMO is WORSE than the original. I think it would have been better if they would have taken BG & BG2 and combined them in one (like the mods that do that) and released that, I think it would have been worth the $20 but $20 for a game I just bought recently at GOG.com for $10 that doesn't offer all that much more than what you can already do for it, on a service that most people are not familiar with...

The mod community has a widescreen mod, but it makes the interface really, really small. BGEE fixes that.
The mod community has extra content, but virtually no new areas that aren't rehashes of existing ones, BGEE adds profesionally done new areas
The mod community has not developed any type of zoom feautre, BGEE adds that.

So yah, it does offer things that mod community hasn't done. Is it worth your money? That's up to you of course.

This is technically true but not as good as it sounds. "The Black Pits" is the one and only new area in BGEE and it has nothing to do with the regular story and amounts to a battle arena where you can fight really tough battles to test your Baldur's Gate combat tactics prowess.

If you're in to combat tactics, then I suppose it's a great addition.

If, like me, you're far more interested in the story and roleplaying than the combat, then the Black Pits is a huge disappointment compared to what Beamdog teased at when they first announced the project.

That is incorrect. Bashir adds the areas of The Cloud Peaks and Neera adds a hideaway near Durlag's Tower.

Mea culpa. Thanks for that correction. I didn't realize that the new characters involved new regions.
Well the game is now on steam and it sells for about 13 euros, which is not half bad. I'm guessing that GOG will follow soon.

Also, when they re-released stronghold in HD, existing owners got the new version for free. It's unlikely that the same thing will happen to Baldur's Gate but it sure would be awesome. And GOG being who they are, it just might happen. It wouldn't with anybody else but GOG really seems to care about their customers.

I don't think that's a reasonable comparison, as BG:EE is regarded as an entirely separate product with additional content from a party uninvolved with the original game, not just a HD update. And I think it was already stated somewhere that Beamdog has no intention of releasing the game on this site, although what BlueMooner suggests does sound like something that could change their minds.
