I have zero clue why people are recommending stats like that...

You can boost,, STR, dex, and con and CHR to over 20 with magic items, no issue... INT and wisdom is the only stat that you can not boost easily.. espeically for fighters.....

Worrying about STR 18/XX is pointless, any item you get will boost you to 19..

Dex, there are items that set you to 18, and very easy to find..

con, you can get items that set you to over 18 so again you are just wasting points by cutting INT,, getting the boost from 18 to 20, is just as easy as getting it from 14 to 20 for the most part.. with fighters anyway...

CHR, you need minimum for paladin class, and there is an item that will set you to 18, which also stacks with other items...

I would much rather have a character like 18 STR, 15 dex, 15 con, 18 chr, 10 int, 14 wis... 10x better in the end... and much less worried about using spells to fix issues.. though you can always use the spells to buff...

a character with these stats, could easily be buffed up to close to max stats of 25, when needed...

I'd rather roll those stats and free up those slots for other gear, YMMV.
well with 6 characters, there is plenty of gear to spread around, including all the characters that come and go.... I wont bother to go into if you are power gaming, which is really what those stats are saying, a fight/cleric beats a paladin, hands down, every time...

Other than that, it is sad that BG let's you Min/max stats like it does, and ruins the very essence of RP....

Yea, just what we want in a leader... a 3 INT... someone bright enough to perhaps tie his own shoe.. Now if he can figure out that it actually goes on his foot, that is a whole other story.. I could never give a 3 int, just for that simple fact...

You are reading notes, speaking dialogue with a 3? i think not....

Well, that's the wonderful thing about playing single player - you get to play the way that's most fun for you. ;)

I suppose, but it is defiantly not in the spirit of the AD&D rule-set this game was made from. call me a purist, but this sorta thing makes me skin crawl.. :P
I want to say some things as well:

- You don´t need to min/max your char (or make an entire group) to beat the game (BG1 and 2).
But sometimes it can make the game much easier.
Since YOU create your char, it is your choice what you do.
But don´t complain that the game is boring because your char is overpowered.

- You don´t need to consider mind flayers when you decide how much int you need.
First of all, there are not so many of them in the game.
Second, there are many ways to solve the problem. This is my way:
Give a char with good AC and some int an item that protects from mind affacting spells.
Let him go to the monsters and run back when they see him.
Let your other char use ranged weapons while the monster chases him.

- I like the NWN system more than the one of BG.
You have only a set number of points to spend so rerolling makes no sense.
Of course, you can min/max there as well. But you will never create a char that has high number in all stats.
