I have installed Baldur's gate from the "Dungeons & Dragons anthology, Master collection" It comes with several games and most of them work just fine. But Baldur's gate 1 won't open Every time I click play I get the message
"An Assertion failed in d:\Dev\chvideo.cpp at line number 4256 programmer says: no video modes supported"

I'm also having the same problem with "Planescape Torment" from the collection but the other 4 games and their expansions all work fine.

I have searched all over online for a help and found that this is a common problem but no solution. Can anyone help me with this? The game is currently installed completely pure; I have no mods or patches just the game.
It sounds like you have a non standard screen resolution set and are running the game in full screen. Try either changing your desktop resolution to a standard one or run the game in windowed mode.

My screen resolution is still on its default of 1920 x 1080 is that not standard? As for the run in windowed mode I thing I tried that already. I came across one of your older posts when I was searching for a solution on my own. The guy there was having the same problem and you told him the Full Screen=0 thing. I tried that but the game still said the same thing when i tried to play it.

You resolution is a standard one. However, that error message is definitely a resolution error. Are you saying that the error occurs even in Windowed mode? Post the entire contents of your baldur.ini here.
IIRC, BG1 only supported 640x480, and I'm pretty sure that was also the case for PS:T (which also used one of the earlier incarnations of the Infinity Engine, as evidenced by such matters as the lack of a hotkey to highlight interactable objects, which was standard in later games).

I'm actually not sure modern Windows video drivers support 640x480 as a fullscreen mode anymore; I just checked on my Windows 10 Pro machine with a GTX 770 and recent drivers, and it will not even allow me to select a resolution that's lower than 800x600, which I'll note is the official minimum supported spec for Windows 10. My guess is that BG1 and PS:T are specifically asking for a 640x480 resolution, and the driver's telling the games that it doesn't know that resolution. As no resolution exists in common between the game and video driver, "no video modes" are supported indeed and the game bombs out.

The later games had at least minimal support for higher resolutions, at least to 800x600, and in some cases 1024x768 or 1280x1024 (although the latter were never officially supported and a too high resolution, even if selectable and appearing to work, could cause issues of varying severity with game scripting), so that's why they still start.

The Enhanced Editions are a better fit for modern computers, IMO, and they eliminate these issues as well (indeed, the game is capable of arbitrary resolutions and the window can even be resized during play without any apparent issues).

That's all fine and dandy, and I would agree with you if I was going to play the game unmoded. I have the Enhanced Edition, but I have numerous mods that I have accumulated over the years that not only no longer get support, but you can't even find them online anymore. These mods are not compatible with the Enhanced edition so I need the original as well.

But thanks for breaking down the issue for me. At least I understand what the problem is now.

[Alias]

Your ini is broken. Delete it. Close the game and delete it. Then run the config exe inside the install folder, then run the game and set options again.

If that doesn't create a new ini correctly (because of the alias), make a new one with just the following and run the config / set settings again:

[Program Options]
Installing=0
Install Type=3
BitsPerPixel=32
16Bit Textures=0
3D Acceleration=0
GLSetup Driver=-1
[Alias]

CD5:=C:\Disc games\Baldur's Gate\data\;C:\Disc games\Baldur's Gate\CD5\
[Game Options]
Memory Access=100
Memory Level=1
Use 3d Animations=0
Low End Machine=0
[Local]
Language=English
Language25=English
[GameSpy]

The above is what a clean ini looks like in a new installation. Note the GOG version is not the 6 CD version, that's why the above alias is as it is.

Well this didn't work either but admittedly I'm not really clear on what you were telling me to do. But that's okay I think I'm just going to give up on this It's probably easier to try and update my mods for EE rather than try and get this running. as for Planescape I'll just buy Gog's version of it to replace my older one. Thanks for the efforts though.
