Hickory: The dogs barking are 'ambient' sounds, and now you've got Near Infinity up and running it's a simple task to set their volume in the area files. Just click on the area you want -- AR6700 for BGT Beregost -- and scroll down to 'Ambient 9', and check that it says 'Name: Dogs...'. Double click it and a new window will open. Just above the sounds (AMB_M26A.WAV etc.) is a volume entry. Set it to how you would like. When you click on another area or close the window, select to save the file. This will create an override, which you may delete at any time. Rinse and repeat for any other areas that bug you.
Thanks for leading me in the right direction :)

There were many area files in the override folder, so editing them directly probably wouldn't be a safe option. I also did a search, and the files were in 28 different areas, so lots to edit. Instead, I located the listed .wav files in Near Infinity to check it was the pesky dogs. Then copied one of the .wav files already in the override folder that were silent (seems like lots of files are like this for some reason), and renamed them to the ones listed in NI. They're probably not the same length, but hope it will be okay. Have done a brief test visiting Beregost and Nashkel. Have heard horses, children and various other ambient sounds, but no dogs barking so far, so it looks like this works! =)

Yes, that will be fine. The length is irrelevant. What matters is the file name and type/encoding.
This is bound to be a long shot, but for some reason somebody are saying "So it has come to this, has it?" every 5-10 seconds while in Baldur's Gate, which has become rather grating. Any idea why, and how I might remove it? I'm looking at various areas in Near Infinity (for instance AR7700, 7800), under Ambient, but can't see where it might originate from, and I've tried a lot of the WAV files now.

Looking at the incredible amount of files and scripting for this game, DAMN, they did a great job.

---

Oh never mind, I was an idiot :o

It was due to the previous workaround. The file I copied apparently wasn't silent afterall, despite taking up a whopping 17.5kb and being utterly silent when played outside the game. Thankfully found the right file when searching for the string in the dialog.tlk file. Now I've renamed the silent paper.wav file, so hopefully it will work better this time.

I like the idea of the angry dogs admonishing the player with "so it has come to this, has it?" after someone attempts to silence them.
Another small question, from the start of BG2. We found the Helm of Balduran, as expected. But the Mail of the Dead has *not* showed up yet. I read it is supposed to be on the corpse of Ilyich, but there was nothing, just leather armour. Before the fight with Sarevok I moved the Mail of the Dead to the main PC, just to be sure it would transfer over (though I think it should anyway as the default item). I am playing the game in BGT, but I would think the items still show up where they would in normal BG2?

Looks like something went awry again, and I may need to 'cheat' it back in with the console.

Are you sure you searched the corpse of Ilyich? Sometimes, depending on the strategy used, duergar (including Ilyich) can flee, and I've seen them flee into the locked door that leads to the genie. Note that if you have found the dryads' acorns you have found Ilych. If you have not found the acorns, you have not found Ilyich.

I killed them all on the spot there, so I know it was Ilyich, and I also have the acorns and have got the bottle from the dryads and swapped for the sword with the genie.

Looked at the script yesterday and it appears to be correct to my eyes, so odd that the item didn't appear on his corpse.

IF
HasItem("leat01",Myself) // Leather Armor
OR(5)
HasItem("CHAN03",Myself) // Mail of the Dead +2
HasItem("CHAN07",Myself) // Chain Mail +3
HasItem("PLAT02",Myself) // Plate Mail +1
HasItem("LEAT03",Myself) // Protector of the Second +2
HasItem("LEAT06",Myself) // Missile Attraction +2
THEN
RESPONSE #100
DestroyItem("leat01") // Leather Armor
FillSlot(SLOT_ARMOR)
END

This other thing may be a Linux issue, I'm not sure, but I've noticed pretty extreme lag when in the mage or priest scroll screens, where you select memorised spells.

It is odd, but you seem to be getting more than your share of 'odd' behaviour. I'm wondering if this is also related to your next point, re. Linux and the BGT conversion.

In Windows the usual 'fix' for that is to install DDrawFix. Not sure how that applies, if at all, to Linux.

Tried to install Ddrawfix from here, but it failed with both options due to only working on x86 systems, and I have 64-bit. Bah.

Wouldn't think the game itself should have more errors on a Linux system than on Windows, at least of the type I've had. It's a little frustrating, I admit, but so far there have been workaround or codes to use -- although missing out on Mail of the Dead isn't really a big deal. It's kind of crap anyway. Normal splint mail + ring of protection gives the same AC, and better saving throws. From what I've found, it's usually better to drop magical armour and go with other magical items instead. Even more so in BG2 I imagine, as AC becomes less important and making saves is what will keep your guys alive.
Just fyi the Protector of the Second is (Leather Armour +2) and will push all others out if thats the leather armour he had on... good luck in bg2

I remember selling that item in BG1. Ilyich didn't have any special armour on him, just regular leather armour, so something must have gone wrong. I didn't find any special armour anywhere else in that dungeon either, only the helm of balduran.

Not counting the Golden Pantaloons, only two items transfer. You've 'lost' one and found the other.
Stupid question coming up.

Have just done the Planar Sphere (and got that as a stronghold, which will hopefully be interesting). There are some runes in there you need to tick in the right order to open up the lower level. I happened to be fortunate and only get burnt once, but is there a clue somewhere to which sequence is correct?

Another one: Is it possible to sell left over quest items anywhere? Like keys, books and journals, locks of hair, and nasty demon hearts? Would be nice if the game automatically removed these things once you 'spent' them on the quests actually.

Not to my knowledge, but you can store them. I recommend using the room by the entrance of Watcher's Keep; this way, you will still have access in Throne of Bhaal just in case. (Note that if you actually complete Watcher's Keep, you will lose access.)

You could also put them on the ground. I am not entirely sure, but I *think* quest items won't disappear like other items eventually do.

Yes. The runes are actually numbers. Look closely: 1, 2, 3, 4.

The only person (in vanilla BG1) that buys such things, ie. 'miscellaneous' things, is officer Vai in Beregost. She does not buy 'anything', though, only items tagged as 'miscellaneous'. Also, she is the only vendor that has no depreciation in her prices, so if you want to continue to use her, *never* talk to her without a bandit scalp in your inventory, because she returns to Baldur's Gate if you do. I don't think there is an equivalent in BG2. In that game I usually dump anything I don't want into a well-remembered container, like inside an inn.
