It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Hickory: Are you loading an existing save game, or starting a new one? With the widescreen mod, you're better of starting again, because any errors from previous sessions are stored in the saved game.

Also, Avast can be a royal pain in the backside when it comes to games. You might want to consider an alternative, or completely disable/exit it when playing games.

i-Lo: Yep, looks like Avast was the trouble maker. Thanks for all the help.
And thank you for reporting your findings back.

xenobrain: Highly Recommended Mods:

Widescreen Mod and GUI Mod
Be sure to use one of the following resolutions when installing widescreen or the installing the GUI mod will fail: 1024x600, 1024x768, 1280x768, 1280x800.
Quick question about this. Does that mean you have to play the game in one of those four resolutions? Because the resolution I play at is 1360 x 768, so would that mean it's impossible to fit the game to my screen if I install either of those mods?

You can use any standard resolution. For example, you can opt to convert to 1360x768 but *not* 1363x770 .

Yes you have to choose one of those resolutions.

And choose No, you don't want support for multiple resolutions.

I'm having problem installing the widescreen mod. Picked the recommended settings (1280x768 res, no to multiple resolution) and got the error as attached. I even disabled Avast AV and set the monitor resolution to 1280x768.

Do you have full administrative rights to the install location? If Windows 8, I believe you have to install to the user account for full rights. Other than that, you should post the contents of your setup-widescreen.debug log.

I used the default directory (C:\GOG Games\Baldur's Gate) and my OS is Windows 8.1 x64. Yes I did ran all the exes with admin rights. I guess I'll have to try using the easytutu method if all else fails.

The link to the widescreen mod http://gibberlings3 (dot) net/forums/index (dot) php?app=downloads&showfile=896

There is a problem during installation with one of The Bigg's mods. That is where the installation is failing. What mods do you have installed (weidu.log)?

I didn't install anything except for the widescreen mod :(

the weidu log

// Log of Currently Installed WeiDU Mods
// The top of the file is the 'oldest' mod
// ~TP2_File~ #language_number #component_number // [Subcomponent Name -> ] Component Name [ : Version]

Ok, then I may be misinterpreting the debug log, because the prefix TB# noted in the log belongs to The Bigg, but he is also the maintainer of the widescreen mod. In that case, I suggest you post your problem in the G3 Widescreen forum.

Yeah I guess that's the best choice for now, will lurk the forum later. Thanks for the help btw :)
Is there some other link for the BG1 widescreen mod? The link on the Gibberling page only redirects to the forums and the link in the forums just to the same page, which then again redirects to the forum...

Or is the widescreen mod part of the linked GUI mod? (Not really sure by the description of the downlaod page).

The G3 forums have recently gone through some changes, and all of the old links are not redirecting properly. To be honest, it's about time they sorted things out. Here is the correct link for the widescreen mod downloads.
