It's interesting that I have been back and forth around the map and had not one random encounter. Were they removed? I hope not -that was a major source of money and experience. There used to bugs and bandits everywhere. Not now.
Just a thought but do you and your companions have high survival points or wearing stuff that raises it? I think that will aftect how many random encounters you have.

I thought that only affects how likely you are to finding useful random encounters.

I thought enemy encounters occurred regardless - survival just affects chance to escape, while speech affects chance to "talk your way out of it" (the latter only available for human enemies, obviously.

Survival also affects chances of finding animal trails, and chances of successfully following those trails.

At least, this was how it was prior to the update, IIRC.

I had just started the game and went to pick up Fidel when I noticed on the way back that I had not encountered a single bandit. so I went back and forth to experiment. At this point I had only low stats in everything.
My first game must have been a fluke. I started another game and the encounters are now present although it seems that they are not as frequent as before the update. I could be wrong about that. Another interesting thing I noticed: Your speed is faster on roads on the map than if you travel overland. It's only a little but noticeable. I also noticed that night on the map is darker than it used to be for some reason.

I started a new game earlier today, and I definitely had encounters.

It seems that they tweaked the chance of using your skills to talk/escape - seems to be much lower than I remember, which is probably a good thing considering it was ridiculously easy to avoid stuff before. Of course this is a new character so it could be just that my speech/survival skills are just really low - so maybe nothing's changed here and I'm imagining it.

I'm also not sure if this was added to make it easier or there was always a chance of it happening, but this time when I went to kill the snitch his shiv broke after about two hits! After that, instead of trying to hit me, he started running back and forth in front of the house (didn't try to actually escape, just did a Benny Hill - just needs the music... ;)). That was pretty funny anyway.

yeah, you're right , that is exactly what the snitch did with me. My first game must have been a real weird and rare bug.
Have you noticed that nighttime on the map is much darker? I don't see that it makes any difference but I wonder if it is just my machine.

Not really. I remember night time always being quite dark on the map. The day-night cycle seems to gradually phase in now though (or it did this before and I didn't notice).
